Welcome Janet Markham

story thumbnail
At the regular meeting on Monday night, BEL Rotary had the pleasure of welcoming their newest member to the club.  Janet Markham grew up in Kingston and started figure staking at the age of 6.  She was a member of the Canadian competitive dance team for many years, and after years of international travel with the team began a coaching career in Michigan (where she met her husband at age 11!)

As a mom of two boys ages 21 and 23, and the wife of a busy dentist, she has fulfilled many roles: parent, patient coordinator at the dental practices, event organizer, and fundraiser.

Janet is not new to Rotary service.  She was a member of the Huntsville Twilight Rotary Club and with long time Rotarian husband has been involved in many service projects, conferences and of course parties!

Janet is looking forward to building her Rotary story with BEL and the club is delighted to introduce her as our newest member!  Welcome Janet!

A Visit From Paul Harris

story thumbnail
On October 23rd, BEL Rotary celebrated their annual Foundation Dinner.

Past Governor Don Watkins assumed the persona of Rotary founder Paul Harris and took us through the first 10 years of Rotary.  Paul Harris founded Rotary International in 1905 with 3 business colleagues.  It started as an opportunity for a lonely man to network and grew into a worldwide organization, committed to the betterment of lives across the globe.  The first project was a public washroom in Chicago and it grew from there.  Thank you PDG Don for a great presentation!

BEL Rotary Recognizes Paul Harris Fellows

At the annual Paul Harris Dinner, the BEL Club had the honour of recognizing two community members who work to make the world a better place.  Kendra Tucker has long been a member of the BEL extended Rotary family.  She has been an active volunteer in all aspects of BEL life, most notably her leadership in the “Adventures in Understanding” program – an opportunity for students to learn about the travel and tourism industry.  “Kendra is the kind of person who always steps up and thinks of others”, said presenter Susan Davidson.

Brenda Mann is tireless in her community service.  She has worked with “Days for Girls” providing menstrual kits for women and girls in developing countries, allowing girls the opportunity to go to school, was instrumental in the sponsorship of an Afghan family and volunteers with her church and the Ennismore Curling Club.  “She does something kind every day” said presenter Mary Lou Tryan.

Tulips for Polio Eradication

story thumbnail
October 24 is World Polio Day. Pakistan has one wild Polio case so far this year and Afghanistan 6. They are the only countries with the wild virus. Amazing results given the turmoil from floods and earthquakes. Children are still being vaccinated.

The BEL club came together to plant tulip bulbs that were bought to help raise funds towards total elimination of Polio. We went to 3 different locations: the Bridgenorth Library, Heritage Park Bridgenorth and Royal Gardens in Peterborough were Honorary member Audrey lives. BEL Brings Thanksgiving to Local Families

story thumbnail
For many of us, Thanksgiving is a time of autumn colours, the beauty of nature and gatherings with family and friends over dinner complete with roasted turkey, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings.  With food costs soaring and families experiencing economic loss and uncertainty celebrations such as this are elusive.  Food insecurity touches many families, and1 in 3 who access food banks are children.

BEL Rotarians with the support of John Le Quang owner of John’s Independent Grocer in Bridgenorth, brought Thanksgiving to some of our local residents.  Rotarians purchased, packaged and delivered all of the makings for a turkey dinner, treats and other staples to those experiencing challenging times.  “It was overwhelming to see the reaction of the families.  One mom was visibly shaking with gratitude as we delivered to her door.

Adventure in Understanding: Developing Mutual Understanding and Respect

story thumbnail

Adventure in Understanding

The Canoe is an iconic Canadian vessel symbolizing respect, relevance, reciprocity and reconciliation.  The Adventure in Understanding Program embodies this spirit and brings together indigenous and non-indigenous youth to share and experience aspects of Indigenous culture, and to build respect for themselves, each other and the environment.

Participants connect with the water, the air, the plants, the animals and each other.  Youth embark on a six day (five night) canoe voyage from Peterborough, through the Trent Waterway to Curve Lake First Nation.

Each year BEL Rotary sponsors a student to participate in this amazing opportunity.  This year BEL Rotary was delighted to sponsor a student from British Columbia.  Through a paddle (carved at Curve Lake) a connection was made and an educator came with a youth to find out more about the program.  In the words of one participant, “I developed a richer understanding of myself and the incredible people I shared the experience with”.

As part of the Shamrock Festival weekend, BEL Rotarians worked with "little carpenters: to build bee houses, bird houses and owl houses.  The delight on the children's faces when they saw their creation said it all.  Not only did they have fun and complete a project they could be proud of, they created something that will benefit the environment, one of Rotary's areas of focus.  Thank you to our adult carpenters: Heather and Scott Negrych, Bob Fawcett and Mike Richardson for making this opportunity possible.

Polar Plunge a Huge Success

story thumbnail

The 43rd annual BEL Rotary Polar Plunge in is the books and what a huge success it was!  After two years of the virtual plunge, jumpers were able to gather in person and brave the frigid waters of Chemong Lake. More than 100 jumpers took to the water and raised in excess of 50,000!

Money raised from the plunge is divided between the charity of the plunger’s choice and BEL Rotary.  Local programs of the BEL Club include sponsorship of the annual “Adopt a Family” festive season program, support of Chemong Community Care, food sustainability, support for local schools and the development and maintenance of Rotary Park in Ennismore and BEL Rotary Bridgenorth Trail. Internationally the club supports the refurbishing of schools in Nepal, clean water in Cambodia and the world wide eradication of polio.

BEL Rotary Brings Easter to Local Families

Many families in our community continue to face daily challenges presented by the continuing reality of the pandemic.  Once again BEL Rotary rose to the occasion and purchased, packaged and delivered the makings of an Easter dinner with all the trimmings, treats, Easter crafts and special Easter “goodies” for the children, to local families.

In the words of Rotarian Kim Whynot, “The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others is what Rotary is all about. The gratitude of grandma and the extended family was overwhelming.  John from John’s Independent in Bridgenorth is so supportive.  He insisted I take the biggest turkey there was!”

It is thanks to the support of our community partners that the BEL Rotary Club is able to take on projects such as this.  We extend a special thank you to John’s Independent in Bridgenorth for your generous support.

BEL Rotarians Recognized!

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to change the world through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.  Simply said, it is to do “good” in the world and come one step closer to peace.  When a person is recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow, it means that 1000 USD has been donated to the Foundation either by or on behalf of the individual.

Foundation dollars make a difference.  Local projects supported by the Rotary Foundation include the annual adopt a family project, support of the Lakefield and Bridgenorth Food Banks, support for local agencies and Long Term Care facilities during the pandemic, the BEL Rotary Bridegenorth Trail and the provision of equipment to local schools.   Internationally, foundation dollars have supported the eradication of polio, the Rotary School of Cambodia and most recently the disaster relief fund to support those most affected by the war in Ukraine.

A Paul Harris recipient upholds the ideals of Rotary in their personal and professional life.  At the Monday meeting, BEL Rotary recognized three of its own.  Rotarian Girv Devitt received his Paul Harris +6 (a total of 7000 USD) in person, Bob Fawcett his Paul Harris +2 (a total of 2000 USD) and Christopher Tworkowski his Paul Harris +8 (a total of 9000 USD) both virtually.  All three of these members have been tireless in their commitment of time, expertise and resources to the betterment of the community.

Thank You Plungers!

The BEL Rotary Club sends a huge THANK YOU to all of the sponsors, supporters and participants of the second annual Pandemic Polar Plunge.  Plungers demonstrated the true spirit of giving, showed their creativity and raised more than $15,000.  The true benefactors of this event are the charities named by the plungers and the members of our community who benefit from the work of BEL Rotary. Thank you to the plungers for your efforts to make this event so much fun.  Thank you to the “pledgers” for your ongoing support.  To see the antics of this crazy, community minded group of people visit the youtube link https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrJ_vjU_4l2JaS8j5mZoW5A  The most money raised by an individual was Jodie Mulder.  She raised more than $3500 in support of Community Care! The best video was by the KVEC Porcupines team: Amber McGill, Elizabeth Dillon, Dana Salahub and Shelby Cohen who plunged to raise money for the Kawartha Wildlife Centre.

We also extend a sincere thank you to our sponsors: The Wolf, Fresh Radio, Global Peterborough, Bridgenorth Guardian, Bridgenorth Home Hardware, Savage Arms and the Lakefield Herald for your ongoing and tremendous support.  You are awesome!

A heartfelt thank you to all – we couldn’t do it without you.

Tulips for Polio

BEL Rotarians joined Rotary and Rotaract clubs from across Canada to participate in Rotary’s “End Polio Now Tulip Campaign”, in support of Rotary’s ongoing goal to see the complete eradication of this horrible disease.

The net proceeds of all sales coupled with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Matching Grant of 2 to 1, will see a total contribution of just over $185,000 in funding going towards this critical initiative!  We are almost there. The children of the world are depending on us!

BEL Rotarians Bring Christmas to Local Families

It has been another challenging year, and many of our community members continue to make difficult decisions as they balance financial obligations in the reality of the ongoing pandemic.
Again this year, in response to the pandemic and increased need they once again increased the number of families supported and also included food items and the makings of a festive holiday dinner.  With input from the local schools and the families, members purchased toys, games, puzzles, sporting equipment, clothing and books suitable to the needs and interests of the children.  The theme for 2021 was “FAMILY FUN TIME: games and resources for families to connect and enjoy healthy living indoors and out”.

BEL Rotary was able to put a smile on many faces!  We are proud to be part of such a warm and generous community!

A World Without Polio: Making the Dream Come True

On October 24th, the world celebratedWorld Polio Day.  This recognition was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, the medical researcher who led the first team to develop a vaccine against polio. He developed the inactivated polio virus vaccine which came into use in 1955, after which Albert Sabine developed the oral vaccine that came into use in 1961.

World Polio Day has been observed for over a decade. It is a day to celebrate the great strides towards eradicating the Polio virus. We also use this day to thank the thousands of healthcare workers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to vaccinate children, often at great risk to their lives.  BEL Rotarians joined Rotarians from the Peterborough and Kawartha Clubs to walk to raise awareness of polio.

Giving Forward

For many of us Thanksgiving traditions include long walks in the woods enjoying the beauty of nature, and then returning home to the smells of roasting turkey and potatoes, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings for a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner.  Many families in our community have continued to experience increased economic loss and uncertainty during this difficult time making celebrations such as Thanksgiving elusive.

BEL Rotarians with the support of John Le Quang owner of John’s Independent in Bridgenorth, were able to bring Thanksgiving to some of our local residents.  Rotarians purchased, packaged and delivered all of the makings for a turkey dinner (as well as a few treats) to those in need.

Gazebo Dedicated to Charter President Bob Ash

On Monday evening, BEL Rotarians gathered for the first time in more than a year and a half.  It was a very special occasion: the dedication of the gazebo in Rotary Park to Charter President Robert (Bob) Ash.  Bob was known as Mr. Rotary and worked tirelessly to make the community a better place.

Bob’s motto was “doing good while having fun” and he did just that, with a smile and in his usual good nature, Bob put “service above self”.

Public Accessible Boat Launch Dock

BEL Rotary is proud to provide the only public accessible boat launch dock in the area. Michael Box, an Ennismore resident who uses a fully motorized wheel chair, is an avid boater and spends many hours on the water with his wife and son.  In the spring of 2020, he and his family met with the BEL Rotary Community Services committee to suggest accessible access to the boat launch dock at Rotary Park.  The Box family donated $500.00 towards the project and the BEL Club enthusiastically took on the project.

Thanks to our incredible community, Dan Kyle Excavating who donated material for the pathway to the ramp, labour and installation of the bollard and sign, and to R & J Machine who completed the installation of the ramp, the accessible boat launch dock is ready for use! Michael indicated he has been able to enjoy boating with his family almost every day since it the work was completed.

Rotary Park

As the province entered Stage 3 of reopening, BEL Rotary members took full advantage of the opportunity to do what they do best: serve the community.

Rotary Park and the gazebo are enjoyed by hundreds of residents and visitors to our community each year.  The Gazebo at Rotary Park (on the west end of the Bridgenorth Causeway) had been relocated to facilitate the Gifford Causeway expansion currently underway.  Last week, the gazebo was “air lifted” to its original position.  Thanks to the hard work of the BEL Rotary Club, it is safely secured to the newly poured concrete pad and beautifully landscaped.  Thank you to Kim and Craig Telford from Scott Concrete Products who generously donated the screenings and river rock and to the Township for covering expenses related to the causeway expansion.  In keeping with Rotary’s goal of inclusivity, the gazebo is fully accessible.

Welcome Heather and Scott Negrygh

The BEL Rotary Club is delighted to welcome Scott and Heather Negrych to the BEL Rotary family.  Scott and Heather are no strangers to Rotary and bring with them years of Rotary experience, enthusiasm and a commitment to youth and the community.  Heather and Scott relocated to Peterborough from Elliott Lake and this is certainly our gain.

Congratulations PDG Brian Menton

At our Monday meeting DG Lynne presented the prestigious Service Above Self award to our own PDG Brian Menton. It recognizes up to 150 outstanding Rotarians and Rotaractors each year whose service activities make an impact on humanity. No more than one recipient is selected from a given district each year, and a person can receive the award only once.

Visiting District Governor Lynne Chant, spoke about the power of Rotary and how Rotary connections enrich our lives.   “The work of Rotary impacts lives in many ways from helping families in need in local communities to working globally toward a polio- free world,” said Chant.

Rotary and Shelter Box

ShelterBox is made up of people who believe in shelter as a human right – that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital.  When people are plunged into crisis, normality is suspended. But good, quality shelter can cut through the chaos. This is why we provide the tools that enable people to rebuild homes and transform their lives.

Thank you to BEL Rotary for your gift of shelter!

40 Years of Service

Past District  Governor and long time supporter addressed the club at the occasion of our 40th anniversary.   The year the BEL Club was chartered, the theme for the Rotary year was “Believe in Rotary":  Tom talked about the meaning of this theme, both to the many people in our local and international communities that we support as well as for members and the way Rotary has been there to support us.  He talked about the many contributions our club has made and referred to us as “Rotarians on Steroids”.
Our members are our strength. Our charter president Bob Ash shared some thoughts of the past 40 years.  Bob remembered the charter evening, former members and the fellowship and service of 40 years.  Bob was thanked by David Rook Green for his contributions over the past 40 years.  Bob is an active participant in all of our local work and was instrumental in the development and maintenance of Rotary Park, the triathlon and polar plunge and is the “face behind the fishing tournaments”.  David presented Bob with a plaque recognizing his service.
President Tony presented Don Thornton with the Avenues of Service Citation, in recognition of his commitment and dedication to the ideals of Rotary.  Don lives the “4 Way Test” and has been involved in mock interviews, the Adventures in Tourism program and worked with local schools on the Rotary awards.  He is an active participant in all service and fundraising projects.  He has been on the Board of Directors providing input and direction and has supported and promoted the Foundation and club international service.  Don planned and implemented many successful International Dinners to raise money for and awareness of the Foundation. He has been involved with our Youth Exchange program and has acted as counselor for and hosted many students.   Don has led by example with 34 years of perfect attendance and more importantly 34 years of 100% engagement.  Don was presented with the Avenues of Service Citation and his 34 year pin. Congratulations Don.

The Spring Opener

Spring Opener 2016 a great success!

On May 5th, under sunny skies, 88 golfers teed off in support of BEL Rotary.  The annual “Season Opener” tournament was held at the Quarry Golf Club and featured specialty event holes, beat the pro, closest to hole and closest to the line as well as prizes and raffles.

The BEL Club extends a heartfelt thank you to the sponsors, prize donors and golfers who made the day such a success.  All of the work of the BEL Rotary Club depends on the support of the community.  Local programs sponsored by the BEL club include supporting the building of playground equipment at Ridpath School, the festive season “adopt a family”, providing the gift of literacy to local children, the super spring clean-up and the continued development and enhancement of Rotary Park and the Bridgenorth Trail.  The club is also actively involved in the eradication of Polio world-wide and the provision of educational opportunities to children in Cambodia.

Cambodia School Build

From Dream to Reality: the Rotary School of Cambodia

A year ago the “Rotary School of Cambodia: BEL Building” wasn’t even a dream let alone the reality it is today.  Twenty five team members led by the Rotary Club of Bridgenorth-Ennismore- Lakefield and made up of Rotarians, family and friends, are home again after completing the three room school/multi use facility consisting of a classroom/library, sewing instruction room and teacher accommodation.  The school is on the site of the Rotary School that was built last year.

Above, members of the BEL club stand in front of the library corner of the classroom that will serve as an English classroom and a library classroom.

Polar Plunge Celebration

On Monday night the BEL Rotary Club celebrated the many sponsors, volunteers and plungers who made the 36th Polar Plunge possible.  The plunge is a fond memory and thanks to the hard work of everyone involved was another huge success.  “The plunge went off like clockwork thanks to the tremendous work of the volunteers and community supporters” said Chairperson Tony Davidson during the celebration. “It is truly a community event and it is the efforts of everyone concerned that makes it such a success.  In the end, it is the charities and the work of BEL Rotary that are the true benefactors.”

Supporting our Seniors

The BEL Rotary Club has been a proud supporter of the work of Chemong Community Care for the past several years.  At the meeting of November 30th, BEL Rotary Community Services chair Chris Tworkowski presented Denise Williams of Community Care with a light weight walker/wheel chair.  This devise will be added to the Community Care lending library.  Many seniors do not qualify for government assistance with the purchase of assistive devices, so the opportunity to borrow much needed equipment will help provide them with independence.

Chris also presented a cheque to support the Thursday morning social time.  It gives seniors the opportunity t0o “get out of the house” and interact with others.

World Polio Day

As we approach World Polio Day, the world is one country closer to Polio Eradication.  On August 11, 2015, Nigeria was declared Polio free, leaving Afghanistan and Pakistan the two remaining endemic countries.  On October 24th, BEL Rotarians will be conducting the annual Purple Pinkie Campaign at Bowles Valumart in Bridgenorth and FoodLand in Lakefield.  Together we can make a Polio-free world a reality.

The Dream Continues

The atrocities of the Khmer Rouge left a generation of Cambodian without training and education, and this has made the country one of the poorest in the world.  Education is the key to a better future.  The BEL Club is working to make this better future a reality.

Polar Plunge 2013

 33rd Jumping of Polar Plunge

Bridgenorth, ON.

The weather outside is freezing or so the Rotary Club of Bridgenorth-Ennismore- Lakefield (B.E.L.) hopes. They have now begun making preparations for the  33rd annual Polar Plunge at Chemong Lake.

What’s new this year?  The B.E.L. Club has implemented an arrangement for jumpers to register and gather donations on-line.  Go to: www.belrotaryplunge.com to sign up if you’re jumping or to donate to your favourite plunger.  Using this method, the Club hopes to surpass their highest year in 2011 which raised in excess of $84,000 for more than 50 charities and the Club itself.

Here is an opportunity to raise funds for the charity of your choice.  60% of the monies raised goes to your chosen charity and 40% comes to BEL Rotary to support its local and international service projects.

The “Freezin for a Reason” event happens on Sunday, Feb 3rd at 2 pm sharp at Rotary Park in Ennismore.  The theme is “Movie Mania” and plungers can compete for prizes including Best Costume and Most Money Raised.  The Best Costume Prize will go to the jumpers who dress in our movie theme and impress our celebrity judges with their “acting”.  The teams who raise the most money will also be recognized one of two categories: the most money raised by a large corporation and the most money raised by an individual or small company.

It’s Christmas, the season of giving and the perfect time to ask your colleagues and friends for their generous support.

For more information, you can go to www.belrotary.com and click on the right hand side to obtain a pledge sheet, see the rules and to find out how to generate an on-line account.  You may also contact Tony Davidson, this year’s Plunge Chair at

705-743-4244 or by e-mail: anthony.davidson@rbc.com.

Polar Plunge = Huge Success

Posted by Dave Tilley on Feb 06, 2011
story thumbnail

Thanks to all the hard work and ingenuity of the 52 teams of 149 jumpers that plunged this year, as well as the many volunteers, the Polar Plunge so far has raised an amazing $81,750. This amount is the best we have ever done in the 31 years the Plunge has been happening. The day was great, even with a little snow, the venue was perfect with the snow bleachers, everyone could see and the antics of the jumpers were amazing.

As to our winners, hats off to Dynacast, Team #1, who raised a total of $31,000, with 9 jumpers starting off the Plunge. Their charity was YMCA- Strong Hands. They will be receiving the trophy for the "Most Funds Raised - large corporation". Bell's Garage, Team  #5 came in again as the winner of the "Most Funds Raised - small group/individual category". The six fellows from Bell's Garage, Bridgenorth, James Jones, John Jones, Steve Keller, Jamie Parker, Jeremy Dennison and Christopher Collins, raised a total of $5635.80 for Wish Upon a Star. And the winners of the Best Costume Trophy were Team #29, Penny Indelicati, Deborah James, Liz Martin, Sarah Maki, Corine Musson and Laura Guresney. They dressed as the Fruits of the Loom, underpants and all.

Some of the day’s pictures will be posted by the end of the week. If you would like a copy of your plunge photos please email Courtney your Team #/Name, costume and number of jumpers and she will email them to you.

Thanks to all for the most successful plunge in our 31 years!

The race is on to become the best dressed or most well-funded Super Hero at the 31st Polar Plunge on Feb 6th, 2011, @ 2 pm sharp at Rotary Park in Ennismore.  Tony Davidson, Chair of B.E.L. Rotary’s 2011 Polar Plunge Committee said, “Super Heroes as a theme was chosen specifically by the Club because all the plungers are heroes for their audacity in braving the cold, cold winter waters of Chemong Lake to aid others less fortunate”.  The theme also honours firefighters and police such as those in Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield who often rescue snowmobilers and boaters from the Chemong Lake itself.

Hi I’m Jeanette Heffernan; I have been chosen to represent BEL Rotary. I’m 15 years, and a grade 10 student at St. Peters Secondary School. I play hockey, rugby, and row. I live on a sheep farm with my 2 brothers and 1 sister and my dad is an electrician. I’m really excited to be an exchange student. I want to have a better understanding of the different cultures, and gain more confidence when talking in front of groups. I would like to thank BEL Rotary for choosing me as a representative of their club.

Final Fling Golf Tournament

Posted by Ruth Kuchinad
story thumbnail

Hardy golfers from far and wide are invited to the Bridgenorth-Ennismore-Lakefield (B.E.L) Rotary Club's 18th Annual "Final Fling" Golf Tournament on Wednesday, October 6th, 2010.  Tamarac Golf Course, Ennismore is the site of spirited competition with a shotgun start promptly at 12:30 p.m.  Registration and lunch begin at 11 a.m.

For only $110 per person ($80 for Tamarac members) or $400 per foursome if prepaid, they will be treated to a great 18 holes of golf, supplied with a golf cart, lunch, steak dinner (the best in the area) and lots of prizes.  If they make a hole in one, Tony Davidson from RBC Dominion Securities will even come up with $10,000!

This is the 18th year of the Tournament, which raises funds to support

community groups such as Five Counties Childrens' Centre, Youth Unlimited, Community Care, Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Fire Dept., SEL Libraries and the OPP.  In addition to its international projects, B.E.L. Rotary funds support local projects including annual Christmas hampers, the Hilliard St. trail, Chemong lakefront restoration, the Green Classroom at ChemongPublic School, playground equipment at Ridpath Public School Lakefield, and the gazebo at RotaryPark in Ennismore.

Dave Rook-Green and John Taylor, tournament co-directors, suggest there is no better way to say good-bye to the golf season than to come out October 6th, have loads of fun playing that last round, eating a sumptuous steak dinner, picking up a prize or two and supporting Rotary's good community work.

Registration forms can be downloaded from the right side of the homepage under "Download"
