Timely topics - of immediate interest - crowded the May 26 Kingston North Kitsap Rotary Club agenda
.
The featured speaker for the day was forced to cancel. But there was plenty to talk about, so Rotarians dove into conversation on timely topics.
First, Stan Mack summarized the winter-long Community Conversation, sponsored by Kingston Cares, The Village Green, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Port of Kingston.  Stan reported the community discussion of areas of interest and concern included racial justice, growth, emergency planning, communications, community vision, welcoming people to Kingston, parks, trails and open space, and economic vitality.  A detailed report is on Kingston Cares website.
Pinch-hitting for President Chris Gilbreath, who was away on a well-deserved vacation, President-elect Jackie Baker steered Rotarians to the immediate topic of need, the 15th Annual Swing for Rotary Golf Tournament, June 10, at White Horse.  Sign-up sheets for various tournament duties were distributed; in addition, volunteers may sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go10COC4DA9A723AFDC34-rotary.
There is an immediate need to recruit both golfers and sponsors.  Baker is also looking for people to take on a leadership role in next year's tournament, allowing them to "shadow" this year for experience.
The meeting was two days removed from the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.  North Kitsap Schools Superintendent Dr. Laurynn Evans joined the meeting to give a brief summary of what the School District is doing in response, including resources for students and families, secure buildings with only one access point, visitor registration and background checks, a lockdown system, periodic school drills, and staff training on threat management.  The recent successful schools levy funded security upgrades.  Dr. Evans asked community members to encourage and show appreciation to teachers.
