At their May 1 meeting, Kingston North Kitsap Rotarians heard about a different approach to homelessness in Kitsap County.  That of Kitsap Homes of Compassion. Volunteer Rae Holt explained KHoC’s concept is to rent homes at market rates, then convert them into shared homes with four to six adults per home. Participants pay a program fee of $400 to $600 per month.  Such fee covers both rent of a bedroom and a portion of utilities, internet, etc.   Targeting vulnerable categories - seniors, disabled, young mothers - the project aims to prevent individuals from residing in tents or vehicles.  Kitsap Homes of Compassion, established in 2017, currently operates six shared homes serving 29 formerly homeless people.
