Penny is a Save-a-Pet rescue from Puerto Rico (hurricane Maria) and is proudly owned by our very own Club Secretary, Renee. Featured photo is Penny's very first PRAAT visit to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Penny is well on her way to becoming a "put a smile on faces" representative for our Club. Go Penny!

Paul Harris Awards-and the winners are?

Wowee Kazowee. What a night. For those of you who were not able to make the Paul Harris night this past Friday, you missed it. Believe it or not we had about 70 people in attendance. Old members and new members alike were there to honor one of our own as well as two members from the community who have consistently exemplified the ideals of Rotary. Once again congratulations to Past President Brian Kearns, Bruce Fuhrmann from Swezey Fuel Oil, and Don Donaudy from Didit. It was quite the night. One of the honorees may have been tipped off before the dinner, one figured it out just before dinner started, and the last one was clueless. We were also honored to have PDG Marion Stark as well as Rotarians from Westhampton, Bellport, and Brentwood just to name a few. Don’t forget to get out there and meet your fellow Rotarians in our District. Special thanks to Richie Braile, Maureen Mennella, Jan Taraskas, and Pat Barry for putting the night together and thanks for great performances by MC Harold Trabold and our Sgt. at Arms Larry Bonciminio. Turns out Larry didn’t even have to fleece anyone. Happy Dollars willingly came out without any arm twisting whatsoever!

Degner Garden Ceremony

Thanks to the hard work of Richie Braile, fellow Rotarians and friends-the Degner Garden is complete. Fellow Rotarians, family, friends, and members of the Pat-Med HS community gathered on Oct. 11, 2017 at the High School for the dedication of the Baron Degner Memorial Garden. Many wonderful stories and memories were shared by those in attendance. Baron lived a life of "Service Above Self"-may his Garden inspire visitors to do the same.

May 11, 2016 meeting

Our luncheon meeting was excellent-we had a great line up of speakers. A big "thanks" goes to our guest speakers, Shannon O'Neill and Mike Wren from Suffolk Community College who gave an informative and impressive presentation regarding college benefits that are available for military/veterans. We also were very fortunate to have Joselo Marcelo speak to our group about hate crime. Joselo is the brother of Marcelo, the United States citizen of Ecuadorian decent, who was killed by a gang of white teenagers a few years ago. Joselo goes around to various groups to share this tragic story in an attempt to eliminate hate crimes in society.

Project Hope, our January 16 Program

Posted by Paul Vincent on Jan 15, 2013
story-thumbnail

The New York State Office of Mental Health has created the Project Hope Crisis Counseling Program to assist individuals, families, and groups impacted by the disaster caused by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. Project Hope offers free and confidential supportive counseling and public education services to Hurricane Sandy disaster victims in New York City and Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, and Westchester Counties. Project Hope was initiated in November 2012 and it is anticipated that it will operate until fall 2013.

Project Hope provides one-to-one or group counseling services wherever you wish to have them: in your home, place of work, community centers, schools or houses of worship. At a time of crisis, during holidays and at anniversaries of the event, many people find it helpful to have someone who cares, someone who listens. Along with providing support, Project Hope staff help individuals to understand their reactions to the disaster and its aftermath. We help you to think about options and to find people or agencies that can assist with any disaster-related problems.

Key Principles of the Project Hope Crisis Counseling Program

·         Strengths Based—Program services promote resilience, empowerment, and recovery.
·         Anonymous—Crisis counselors do not classify, label, or diagnose people; no records or case files are kept.
·         Outreach Oriented—Crisis counselors deliver services in the communities rather than wait for survivors to seek their assistance.
·         Conducted in Nontraditional Settings—Crisis counselors make contact in homes and communities, not in clinical or office settings.
·         Designed to Strengthen Existing Community Support Systems—The program supplements, but does not supplant or replace, existing community systems.

All Project Hope services are free and confidential.

Drug Abuse on Long Island

Posted by Carol Landy
story-thumbnail
Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds from the LI Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse gave some chilling details about the heroine epidemic in our area. Dr. Reynolds ponted out that high school kids can acquire heroine easier than beer.It costs $5 a bag and students feed their habit by selling it to others.More often than not parents are frustrated by the lack of rehab support available and the drug problem continues to escalate. Mike Mostow pointed out that 70% of his dismissal hearings are marijuna related. Dr. Reynolds indicated the sequence of abuse among kids usually follows the path of beer, vodka, marijuna then the highly addictive heroine. He cautions parents not to allow underage drinking in their homes believing it's safer then drinking elsewhere.Drinking anywhere at a young age places the kids in a vulnerable situation.
