Carly Raye - Iowa Honey Queen“It started March 24th, 2016 with a surprise ceremony from friends at FBI(Friendly Beekeepers of Iowa) where I was crowned FBI Honey Queen”. Carly Raye is the 2017 Iowa Honey Queen, and as such she travels the state giving programs about honeybees, honey, and beekeeping! She has been keeping bees with her parents for the past three years after getting started beekeeping through the Iowa Honey Producer's Youth Scholarship program. Although Carly initially started beekeeping with an interest solely in honey, she now appreciates honeybees and all aspects of the hive and shares that appreciation with whoever will listen. It is her goal to reach all 99 counties before her tenure is completed in November 2018. Carly explained the critical importance of the Queen Bee, who is responsible for the reproduction of bees in the hive. The only purpose of the male drones is to join the race to mate with the queen in order to keep her fertile. The female worker bees do all of the pollen gathering, hive building and honey production. She also mentioned the critical importance of bees practice of pollinating flowers and plants, which is necessary for their growth and development of fruits, vegetables and decorative plant species. Brennan Buckley - Iowa RealtyPresident of Iowa Realty, Brennan Buckley, gave an excellent presentation this morning about the company Iowa Realty, the housing market, and different ways to shop for a home. The main purpose of Iowa Realty, the number one broker in the state, is to bring buyers and sellers together. In addition to that basic purpose, Buckley mentioned Iowa Realty is emotionally invested in their clients. This is evident in their recently adopted mission statement.
Mr. Buckley also shared that the way people shop for homes is evolving. More families are looking towards the internet and the mobile app now rather than the newspaper, though there are still listings in the paper. Approximately 60,000 people use the Iowa Realty app to shop for homes. This may be because the housing market is improving. The Des Moines metro "will continue to win" and the market will gradually become more mobile friendly.
Similar to the Rotary, Iowa Realty is dedicated to service. They donate to several deserving causes such as Variety, Habitat for Humanity, and United Way. Just last year they donated $2,300,000 to Blank Children's Hospital! We are proud to be a part of a community that is so dedicated to serving others.

Wilkerson - Waukee SchoolsWe were joined this morning by Dr. Dave Wilkerson, superintendent of the Waukee School District. He's led the fastest growing school district in the state for 25 years, and recently announced his resignation set for January 2017. As of late, Waukee has approximately 10,000 students and 700 teachers in the district. Under his guidance, the overall student success rate is the highest it's ever been and well above state averages (for example, 60% of 5th graders scored above the 90th percentile on the annual Iowa Assessments).
Waukee High School has also excelled in both athletics and the music program. Last year, the Des Moines register named Waukee All-Sports Champions. This title is awarded to a high school that achieves success throughout all athletic programs. The band and choral music programs are nationally recognized at Waukee. In the next couple days, Jazz Band will be defending their championship title at State competition.
Among other topics of conversation, Dr. Wilkerson's plans for after retirement were brought to the table. He would like to work in education for a few more years until retirement. Currently, there is a college pursuing Dr. Wilkerson and his teaching ability. He's also considering a position at the capitol. We know he'll be of great help wherever he goes.
As Dr. Dave Wilkerson finished his presentation, our club joined in a standing ovation to honor the outstanding work he has put into the Waukee School District. We are sad to see him go, but we couldn't be more pleased with the progress he has made for Waukee Schools.

Waukee School District UpdateThis morning we had the pleasure of meeting Waukee High School's new principal, Cary Justmann. After getting to know Justmann better, we were given an update on the growth of the district. This update was intended to be a preview for the meeting next week with superintendent Dr. Dave Wilkerson. We look forward to learning more about his newly announced retirement, APEX building, Grant Ragan Elementary, and more!

The Pergola is going to be 350 feet long featuring a design theme of "in the shadow of the rails". An estimated 300,000 citizens visit this 89 mile-long trail system every year, and that number is expected to increase within the next couple of years. We can't wait to cure our cabin fever once the Waukee Railroad Pergola is finished!

Richard Leopold - Jester Park Nature CenterSpring is on the rise! We got a sneak peek look at Jester Park's new Nature Center from Polk County Conservation Director, Richard Leopold. This upcoming Nature Center is geared to open Earth Day 2018 and is going to be used as a "base of operations" for educational use, recreational use, and as a gateway to the outdoors. A STEM-based curriculum will be infused in a variety of nature studies offered at the Center, along with teacher externships and project-based learning opportunities. The Nature Center will also be used as a place of recreation. Rental facilities offer cross country skis, insect nets, fishing poles, binocular/bird book combo, etc. It was exciting to learn about new ways to reconnect with nature. We can't wait to go try it out for ourselves!

Mark HansonThis morning, we had the pleasure of listening to Mark Hanson talk about the recent caucus, Dallas County growth, and the "Stepping On" program. As a leader at his precinct, it was interesting to hear Mark's perspective on the Iowa caucus. The process ran smoothly at his location, even though more than twice the amount of citizens appeared than was expected. In addition, Mark is on the Dallas County Board of Supervisors. He shared that the population increased to more than 40,000 people in the last 15 years. With this growth comes many renovations and additions to county buildings and services. To wrap up his presentation, Mark gave us tips to use or share that can prevent seniors over 65 years of age from falling. He is a certified trainer for the "Stepping On" program which helps seniors learn exercise tricks to prevent falling and other incidents (e.g. Tai Chi exercise). Mark provided us with thought-provoking information, and we appreciate the time he took out of his busy life to come speak with us.

Tom did a great job highlighting main points throughout his presentation, making the information useful for everyone. The Rotary Club of Waukee was so happy to have Tom as a guest speaker!

Riverwalk Park Groundbreaking by Jeremy MastersonI am sure that like I, those that braved the chilly temperatures for the groundbreaking were glad they took the time to do so. Being part of an event that is almost a decade in the making was a fantastic experience. The groundbreaking opened with the pledge of allegiance and was followed by a poem about the value of having a place to spend time with family. Representatives from the many facets of the project and the city of Des Moines had an opportunity to address the audience and all shared the theme of how great it was that Rotary could be part of such an historic part of the Principal River Walk and all of the many individuals that helped along the way. Along with some of the major donors given credit, such as the Gabus Family and Principal, two individuals from our own club were named as major parts of the success of the project outside of the Des Moines Club, Erna Morain and Roger Schlaefer whose leadership and inspiration drove much of the spirit of this project. After the photos had been taken, the event ended with the entire group reciting the four way test which, considering the project, all of the many Rotarians that participated in its success, and the benefit this will have to the community, a more perfect ending could not have had.

15th AnniversaryDistrict Governor, Waukee Rotarians, Rotarians, Family and Friends, thank you for joining us today to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the chartering of the Rotary Club of Waukee. It is great to see so many of you here this morning. I have received apologies from members who are out in Washington DC with the annual Greater Des Moines partnership, or who were unable to be here with us.
In 1999 on May 18th our club was chartered and the club had weekly Thursday meetings at Immanuel Lutheran Church. These 15 years we have built on the work of our previous leaders and our Waukee Rotary Club is what it is today because each president has picked up the baton and through the changes the Club has evolved in a positive way. Today I would like to honor and congratulate 7 of the original members in our club:
Craig Butterfield John Wemer Paul Kerkhoff Jim Riordan Mike Stifel Roger Schlaefer Dave Horner
Thank you and congratulations. Would all of our presidents stand up now and let us show you our appreciation. To honor them, we have a certificate for each of the charter members and presidents to commemorate his or her service.
I have asked all our past president to e mail me a memory or highlight of their year in office and you will find those memories on our club runner web page(www.waukeerotary.org). I encourage you to spend a few minutes reading the highlights.
It’s a dutch tradition that when a person has a birthday or anniversary , everyone congratulates all that person’s family members. Because I am Dutch, I am going to congratulate every Waukee Rotarian for the Club’s 15th anniversary. There is a framed certificate for each one of you, which we are going to distribute now.
You should all congratulate your selfs on the growth of a great club and our 15th anniversary.
Erna Morain, President 2013/14 Rotary Club of Waukee |

2014 District 6000 Conference, AmesThe Waukee Rotary club was honored several times for its membership growth and received the presidential citation award at the 2014 District Conference in Ames this weekend.
The Morains, Holmes, Wheelers, Rasmussens, Robbins, and Dr. Blessman all shared the excitement of the conference and the opportunity to meet Rotarians from the other 63 clubs in District 6000.
Highlights included a surprise welcome from “the Mayor” of Ames, Fred Hoiberg, who was actually subbing for the real mayor of Ames, who recently suffered a heart attack. Hoiberg received an excited standing ovation from the crowd when he entered the room.
District Governor Jacque Andrew of Jefferson completed the highlight of her term on a high note as she presided over a stimulating and thought provoking conference which emphasized both international successes of Rotary and opportunities to strengthen local clubs.
Rotary International Vice President, Anne Matthews, a real southern belle from South Carolina, wowed the crowd with her inspirational message about women in Rotary and the opportunity for all Rotarians to make a difference.
The conference gave the opportunity to become more acquainted with leading Rotarians from all the clubs in District 6000. Some of the Waukee Rotarians had the opportunity to absorb ideas for successful programs from other clubs and brag about our own successes this year.
Jacque Andrew called on the talents of the Jefferson Rotary, her home club, to help organize the well run conference.
If you have never attended a District Conference, you missed the opportunity to get to know what Rotary International is about, be challenged, entertained, and inspired by the tremendous accomplishments of the organization unlike any other in the world. Make up your mind now and put it on the calendar to attend next years District 6000 Conference, April 16-18, at the Coralville Marriott. I guarantee you will be glad that you did. Iowa Friends of Companion Animals by Morgan McLaughlinOn Thursday, May 1, the Rotary Club of Waukee had Mary LaHay present on behalf of the Iowa Friends of Companion Animals non-profit charity. This charity’s main concern is about the welfare of our pets. LaHay spoke mainly about the puppy mills in Iowa and what we can to do help put a stop to unfair animal treatment. Puppy mills are a place that ship and sell puppies all across the country. She shared with us that Iowa is number 2 in the country on highest puppy mill concentration. The biggest problems with puppy mills are their environmental surroundings, owners and treatment. The environments some dogs are forced to live in are horrendous. This includes not proper sanitizing within the facility, major health risks between the dogs and much more. This fault falls directly on the owners’ shoulders. The Iowa Friends of Companion Animals believes everything is entirely because of the owner. Dogs are in great shape and look healthy? It is because the owner was properly treating them. Dogs have lost eyes and possess infections that can potentially be fatal? It is because the owner did not treat them with the right care that dogs should be treated, which leads into the last problem, how the owners treat the animals. The information LaHay shared with the Rotarians were surprising to most. One fact being that some puppy mill owners power wash their facility to remove waste and such, being done so while the dogs are still in cages. After LaHay’s presentation, the Rotary learned the severity of some puppy mills across the state, understanding the charity’s mission statement in great detail, “To advance the humane and responsible treatment of companion animals through collaboration and public awareness.” Thank you to Mary LaHay for sharing some insight on puppy mills and telling people there is always something they can do to help. Mike McCoy by Morgan McLaughlin
The Waukee Rotary was honored to have Mike McCoy be the speaker at the weekly breakfast on Thursday, April 17, 2014. McCoy is known as one of the best amateur golfers in the nation, and he also known as an outstanding business man. Mike has played in 38 USGA Championships including 14 U.S. Amateurs and 14 U.S. Mid Amateurs, bringing home a victory from 5 Iowa Amateurs and 6 Iowa Mid Amateurs. Since 1960, no one has won the Iowa Golf Association Player of the Year Award more than 3 times. Mike won it for the 11th time in 2013, which sufficed for his best year in amateur golf. All of McCoy’s accomplishments were topped off the week of April 7th by playing in the 2014 Masters at Augusta, Georgia. Mike shared his once in a life time experience with Rotarians that morning. He stated how the course was extremely difficult compared to other courses he has played on, but he did let that stop him from playing his hardest. While in Augusta, he played numerous practice rounds with other golfers there, some with a professional title. He got to attend a dinner for winners of various golf outings over the years. To top it all off, his son got to catty for him throughout the trip. He admitted that even though all the golfing wasn’t perfect, it was the perfect experience. Mike has also showed a great amount of success off the golf course as well. He works as an insurance executive at Arthur J. Gallagher and Company, the 3rd largest insurance broker in the country. He has been honored by his colleagues the last 13 years in a row by achieving Gallagher's President's Club Award, one that honors the elite of their organization. At the end of McCoy's presentation, he asked the crowd, "So what is the message?" He replies with saying the message is you do not have to be young to have dreams. Insurance is his profession but golf is his passion. So find the time to live your passion and enjoy it. Morgan McLaughlin |

Vision Soccer Academy of Waukee by Morgan McLaughlinOn Thursday March 27, the Waukee Rotary had Chris Jones speak about the Vision Soccer Academy, also known as VSA. This academy began in 1996 with over 700 member families. VSA provides soccer development opportunities for nearly 1,100 players every year. These players come from all across the state of Iowa including Grimes, Waukee, Urbandale, Johnston, Van Meter, Clive, and West Des Moines. VSA offers four different leagues a child can play in. This consists of a developmental league for 3 and 4 year olds, recreational for U5-U19, academy for U9-U10 and select for U11-U19. Jones introduced the new VSA soccer complex that will soon be coming to the Waukee area. This is an area of soccer fields on 18.5 acres of land that will be located right in town next to the newest Waukee Elementary School, Timberline. There will be one main field with turf and stadium lights, dozens of additional grass soccer fields, a track, multi-purpose building with restrooms and concession stands and plenty of parking for all events that might be hosted there. VSA chose to build this new soccer complex to help encourage soccer development, be able to host more tournaments, create a soccer destination for the Waukee Community and to help meet the needs for sports facilities in the Waukee area. Thank you to Chris Jones for coming to Waukee Rotary and sharing your knowledge and the newest information about the Vision Soccer Academy with our Rotarians!

The Emerald Ash Borer (AEB)Today at Waukee Rotary we had Tivon Feeley, the Forest Health Program Leader at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, speak with us about ash trees and the arrival of the emerald ash borer. What is this insect you ask? It is a green insect that is a primary invader who attacks ash trees and kills other healthy trees as well. It was first seen in Summer of 2002, and has been a big infestation problem ever since. But how do you know if you have the larva in your trees? There are many signs. If you see a split in the tree, that is a big indicator. If you peel off the bark, you can really get a good look to see if it is present or not. Underneath the bark there will be "S" shaped trails that the borer makes to make its presence known. One other sign to look for is white spots in the bark. These spots are left by woodpeckers who eat the larva that are living in the ash tree. Morgan McLaughlin |

Waukee Bond Referendum by Morgan McLaughlinBright and early on this wonderful Thursday morning(Jan. 16), we had Dr. Dave Wilkerson speak to us about the Waukee Bond Referendum and what he sees for Waukee moving forward. Waukee has about 8,200 students enrolled throughout the entire school district. This consist of seven elementary schools (eighth is in planning), one fifth grade building, two middle schools, one ninth grade building and one high school. Waukee is growing so fast, administrators and staff are having a hard time trying to keep up with it! With that said, for ten consecutive years, enrollment in Waukee schools has grown by an average of 470 students per year. Each year that number will continue to surprise everyone.
One main focus for the Waukee School District that Dr. Wilkerson shared with us was the soon to come CAPS Program for high school juniors and seniors. CAPS stands for Center for Advanced Professional Studies, and it gives students the opportunity to explore professions of interest through a problem-based, inquiry-learning method. What CAPS does is partner with local businesses to allow students to experience real life work in their department of interest. There will be roughly 12-15 students per class with one teacher help guide them through the process. It is something that almost every student will want to be a part of.
Thank you to Waukee Superintendent, Dr. Dave Wilkerson, for sharing information with us about the upcoming developments Waukee sees in the very near future.

The Iowa Genealogical Society is active in promoting family history, education, and the preservation of records vital in the search for your ancestors. The Society’s mission is to create and foster an interest in genealogy and to aid others in researching their family history.(iowagenealogy.org). It is a system that really allows people to dive deep in their family's past. It is supported by memberships and donations. The IGS also offers beginning genealogy classes. Liewer stated that, "There are no such things as family secrets, there are just things they don't talk about." People might think their family kept a secret from them by what they find, but in reality, their family just didn't even talk about it. There are so many amazing ways someone can trace their ancestors footsteps to find out how they came to be where they are today. The Iowa Genealogy Society does this by the use of the census, military records, wills, civil war records and much more.So many new and wonderful things can be found out through the IGS. People can be astonished by what they might end up finding. You will never know until you try! Thank you to our speaker, Theresa Liewer, and to the IGS for providing everyone with the opportunity to explore further into family history. Morgan McLaughlin |

Bill Northey-Secretary of Agriculture At the Waukee Rotary we had Bill Northey, the Secretary of Agriculture, share a little bit of background of agriculture and how important it is to keep up with it. Agriculture is more important than a lot of people think. Northey talked about how the demand of crops, such as corn, goes up as the population number continues to rise as well. |

Meeting State and City Officials at Alice's Road Groundbreaking Ceremony On Friday, November 1st, I attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the beginning of the Alice's Road Corridor Project in Waukee. This is a big step for the Waukee Community because the numbers within it keep increasing, which causes the city to expand as well. With the expansion of the city comes some expansions of developmental projects, Alice's Road being the biggest at this time.

Rotary Foundation Minute # 8Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. These past seven weeks you've heard short bursts of information about YOUR Foundation; how it started, what it has become, what it does with your gifts. I hope you're as convinced as I am about the need to become a Sustaining Member of the Foundation. Without the support of Every Rotarian Every Year we will not accomplish what we are capable of doing. Your district, District 6000, has an enviable record of giving and you can feel justifiably proud. District 6000 has given $5,718,754 in just the past ten years! Please give yourselves a well-deserved round of applause. Please,.if you haven't yet made the commitment, do so now as we near the end of November, Foundation month. Without you, our picture is incomplete! |

Rotary Foundation Minute # 7Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. The "Matching Grants" program of the Foundation assists Rotary Clubs and districts in carrying out humanitarian international service projects in cooperation with Rotarians in another country. Whether its service roads, wells, reservoirs, dams, latrines, toilet blocks, or water supplies, Matching Grants programs are the "down-to-earth" projects that make such a difference to the truly poor of the world. Unfortunately, demand for Matching Grants far outstrips our current resources. This is why the Every Rotarian Every Year is so critical. With nearly 1.2 million members world-wide, the Foundation COULD be receiving and allocating $120 million or more each year instead of our current $90 million that is available now. |

Rotary Foundation Minute # 6Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. Four years ago, in an effort to do something more than just talk about world peace, Rotary established seven Centers for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution around the globe-two in the United States. Each year up to 70 scholars at the master's degree level are sponsored to study at one of these seven sites. In 2005-06, 53 new scholars from 25 countries received $2.9 million for the two year program. The goal is to advance knowledge and world understanding among potential future leaders of government, business, education, media and other professions. |

Rotary Foundation Minute # 5Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. When you and I make our donations to the Rotary Foundation, we do so knowing that 50% of that donation will come right back to our District to be used for approved educational and humanitarian programs chosen by us! And Now.20% of our "half" can be allocated to District Simplified Grants for approved projects right in our own communities! Even the other 50% comes back to us indirectly because it's used to match a variety of world community service projects. Our gifts to the Foundation help the world while simultaneously they are rooted deeply in our club and in our community. Every Rotarian Every Year is a reminder to all of us to donate generously to the Foundation on a consistent basis. |

Rotary Foundation Minute # 4Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. The Rotary Foundation provides more money for scholarships than the Rhodes and Fulbright programs combined! Scholars study in a country other than their own where they serve as "ambassadors of good will." Since 1947, nearly 47,000 scholars from some 110 countries have received scholarships at a cost of more than $476 million. These scholars gain not only a priceless education, but in that process, help break down the barriers that exist between nations. |

Rotary Foundation Minute # 3Today's Rotary's Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. Since it's beginning in 1917 with a contribution of $26.50, the Rotary Foundation has received in excess of $1.8 billion. More than 25% of this total has been applied directly to the eradication of polio around the globe. The original campaign took place in the mid-1980's. With the partnership of the United Nations, World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation, Rotary has successfully eradicated polio from 99.9% of the world -the dangerous one-tenth that remains is now the final goal of this greatest of all humanitarian projects. |

Rotary Foundation Minute # 2
Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service. The Foundation was established ."for the purpose of doing good in the world in charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service." It took eleven years - from 1917 to 1928, before the Foundation had assets of $5,000. In 1930 the very first grant was made to the International Society for Crippled Children - later to be known as the Easter Seals organization. Like the proverbial acorn, the Foundation has grown to a mighty oak. Last year Rotarians contributed over $93 million to the Annual Programs Fund, $12 million to the Permanent Fund, and $6 million in Restricted Giving, a total of $111 million! |

Rotary Foundation Minute #1
Today's Rotary Foundation Minute is provided as a reminder to ALL of us that the Foundation is the primary way in which we are involved in the 4th avenue of service - International Service - our crown jewel.
The Rotary Foundation was started with a gift of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City in 1917 - the leftover profit from the international convention that year. Earlier that same year, Rotary's 6th president, Arch Klumpf, had suggested the creation of just such a fund and the first gift was a response to that suggestion.
Every Rotarian Every Year
is a reminder to all of us to donate generously to the Foundation and do it year after year. |

Corey Davison - The Concord CoalitionCorey Davison - The The Concord Coalition is a nonpartisan organization founded in 1992. The Concord Coalition was founded in 1992 by Warren B. Rudman (R- NH), Peter G. Peterson (Former Secretary of Commerce) and the late Senator Paul E. Tsongas (D-MA). The Concord Coalition was formed in response to the Federal Budget deficit. Currently our Nations debt is equal to 8.4 trillion dollars. The Coalition is concerned about handing off this deficit to our children and grand-children. They believe in a pay as you go budget. We must make tough choices on both spending and taxes. We must have spending caps to help reduce our deficit. The Concord Coalition is guided by these key principles:
·
Today's fiscal policy decisions should be made
within a long-term context that accounts for the economic and budgetary
consequences of an aging
