Summary of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Meeting on February 4, 2016

 
David Gier, Professor & Director, UI School of Music
Fellow Rotarian Steve West introduced David Gier for today’s program on the new School of Music.
 
Trombonist David Gier is Professor and Collegiate Scholar at the University of Iowa, where he teaches trombone and brass chamber music and performs with the Iowa Brass Quintet. He is currently the director of the School of Music and has been in the position for six years. Before moving to Iowa, Gier served for six years on the faculty of Baylor University. Gier is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale University, where he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1992.
 
Since the flood of 2008, the School of Music has been operating in multiple locations. In late 2009, a new location for The Voxman Music Building was announced in downtown Iowa City on the corner of Clinton and Burlington Streets. In August of this year, the entire music program will be run out of one location! The new building, designed by LMN Architects from Seattle, will be 6 levels and contain a 700-seat concert hall, a 200-seat recital hall, large practice studios, faculty studios, classrooms, a one-of-a-kind organ built in Germany,  and a student commons area in the base of the building. The central building material is glass, chosen in part to make it more open to the public and highlight the building’s location. 
  
 
 
MEETING
Singing:  Bob Crane led singing of America the Beautiful and Vive Le Rotary! with Jim Conard on the piano.
 
Ride the Goat: The club heard from a goat rider, Jeffrey Dancer.
 
Rotary Moment: Susan Brennan on engaged Rotarian Lynette Marshall. Lynette joined Rotary in 1989 in Savoy Illinois which is a suburb to Champaign Urbana.  She was a charter member of this rotary group upon the recommendation by a professor of Agricultural Law, Don Uchtmann, at the University of Illinois where Lynette went to school and started her professional career in fundraising. 
 
The Rotary experience that had the most impact on Lynette was the International Group Study Exchange Program which is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business professionals.  In 2000, Lynette participated in a group study exchange in Germany.  This dynamic program is an exceptional educational experience designed to develop professional and leadership skills so that the participants can help address the needs of their communities and an increasingly global workplace.  Lynette and Jeffery, in turn, hosted a Rotarian from Belgium for a four month visit – and she did that while pregnant with Kathryn!  These friendships formed through Rotary have had a tremendous impact on their life and something Lynette really values as a benefit of being a Rotarian.

Updated information regarding the 2016-17 Outbound Rotary Scholarships have been posted to the club website.  If possible, please include a note in the next several newsletters advising our members that new applications for the Outbound Rotary Scholarship are now available at www.iowacitynoonrotary.org.  Our club will award two scholarships of $2,500 each for international study during the 2016-17 academic year.  If the recipient is enrolled at the University of Iowa, additional funds may be available through the Allin Dakin fund.  Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2016.
 
The primary requirements are that applicants must be graduates of a Johnson County high school, be at least a sophomore in college, and have at least one parent whose legal residence is within the area served by the IC Noon Rotary Club.  Family members of Rotarians are eligible.  Rotarians are encouraged to refer potential applicants.

John Culshaw and Ann Parker gave a special presentation on Club Flags:
 
As part of the Centennial project all of our 800 club flags have been archived. Members can view our flag collection on the home page of our website. There is a link “click to view collection” that will bring up a map of the world. From there, you are able to click on specific dots on the map to reveal a photograph of the corresponding flag.
