SPEAKER: Luis Davila Colon, noted political pundit, radio and newsprint commentator will give us his "take"on the upcoming general election on November 8. Be prepared for a lively and spot on discussion when our guest speaker takes the podium.
There are three events coming up in November that you are invited to help out with. Please decide what you can do for your Rotary Club of San Juan and for your community:
1. Attend the Turkey Races on Wednesday November 16 9am at Barbosa Park (Ultimo Trolley). Cheer on the 6-9 graders from Llorens Torres as they run around the track to win a Thanksgiving turkey. We have already raised $900 toward buying turkeys, so there will be plenty of winners!
2. Sign up to participate in Share Your Groceries in partnership with the Rotary E-Club Puerto Rico y L.A.. We need a few shifts of volunteers to stand in from of the Selecto on Campo Rico Ave. in Carolina, P.R. We collect items that customers purchase inside and then deposit in our boxes. The food goes to needy families.
3. Contribute a cash donation or your time toward our annual Thanksgiving Day Party, this year to be held at La Concha on Thanksgiving Day. See Edwin Aquino for how you can volunteer.
Give give give of your time and money, and you will enjoy the holidays more.
A PERIOD OF SILENCE was held in memory of Hugh Robison, member of our club for 40 years. A native of Jamaica WI, Hugh was very proud of his service as a pilot in the Royal Air Force in World War II. Our condolences to his family as we only recently learned of his death.
Rafael Aponte, called for nominations from the floor and there being none, nominations were closed. Elections will be held next week at the November 1 meeting for the following slate of officers and directors for Rotary Year 2017-2018:
President - Kenneth McGrath
President Elect - Jose Rivero-Olmedo
Vice President - Telesforo Fernandez
Secretary - Carmen Hammel
Treasurer - Luis Ramirez
Immediate Past President - Jennifer Bates

San Juan Rotary donated $200 to our District's Haiti Relief Campaign. If you want to make a special contribution, let Pat know. All District and Club donations are channeled through Rotary in Haiti.
CONGRATULATIONS to Past District Governor Jorge Vazquez as a Rotary Foundation Award recipient in the Citation for Meritorious Service category. You can see Jorge's award in your November issue of The Rotarianmagazine.
In recognition of Women's Week, Past President Juanita Morris introduced two award winners: Nayssa Varela, an engineer and immediate past president of the American Association of General Contractors, and Liza N. Spickers, who is an electrician. As both women are involved in non-traditional occupations, it was most interesting to hear what inspired them and how they got there. Dedication, hard work, and keeping the faith was the answer. There shared experiences brought to mind the old refrain: "Yes, Fred Estaire was a great dancer but Eleanor Powell, his partner, danced backwards and in high heels. "
Keep the date, Saturday, November 12, in mind as the Union Church of San Juan, in Punta Las Marias, Santurce, celebrates its Annual Christmas Bazaar. Hours are from 9:30 to 2:30, Arts, Crafts, Home baked goods, Food, and a Silent Auction are just a few of the activities. And, Santa will be there!!! Fun for the whole family.
