Our guest speaker is Anamaria Dutceac Segesten, an Associate Professor in Strategic Communication at Lund
University and an expert in social media and politics. Anamaria will share with us recent research within a 2020 Horizon Grant-funded project called “PROTECT."
Using data collected over 5 years (2015-2019) in nine languages (English, Swedish, Danish, Spanish, Polish, Italian, German, French and Dutch) about the discourse on migration in the context of the European Union, the project team explored two dimensions; who is actually talking about migration in different national spheres, and what is that orientation, either for or against migration?
The research results point out that different national public spheres have different actors that lead the discussion. In France, for example, it is politicians, whereas in Sweden, it is activists and alternative media. The overall discourse appears to be leaning in the direction of opposition to migration.
