Our Chair Darryl welcomed guests starting with PDG Alan from RC Aspley, our resident snake charmer Anna, and (very) soon to be members Robyn & David
Kate and Leisa would be more formally introduced later
Irish has uploaded lots of photos, including this tricky cover shot
President James delivered his report:

  • Welfare - Gordon is making steady progress, and Ann is away for a few weeks following a car accident
  • Thanks to Darryl and Richard for their work towards the Gala Ball, and Mark for organizing the photos
  • Meeting last night regarding the 2022 Caloundra Conference
  • Some Cal Pac guests visiting next week
  • Passing of PDG Alan Male, Govenor for the 85/86 year
International Toast to RC Calgary (which a number of members had visited) chartered 1914.  Alberta has had more than 2000 Covid deaths
Thought: Don't take criticism from those you wouldn't take advice from

And of course no one ever remembers Karl Marx's sister Onya, inventor of the starting pistol

Induction of Robyn & David
President James gave them a dollar each to start them on their Rotary journey
"Rotary is a way of life"

In the Three minutes on Rotary segment, Mark talked about our "Brag Sheet" of projects for the centenary, including our latest, the bitumenizing of the quadrangle at the Shepard's Arms Childrens' home, Bohol, which follows on from the fish farm project, assistance for the medical centre, and "Teacher in a Box"

Chris introduced Kate & Leisa, Conservation Officers from Sunshine Coast Council.  Kate had a previous Rotary connection, having being part of a VTT Team to the US ten years ago, looking at the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and assisting her to move into a professional role.
The Loggerhead turtles are the "ancient mariners" of the Sunshine Coast.  They were in danger, but since 2013 are "managing". "Turtle Care" has been running since the early 2000s, and there are now 200 citizen scientists assisting.
Gandugan is a visitor from his home reef 21/007 off Mackay, where she normally only travels in an 800m radius to find food (Google knows where everyone is these days)

Turtles don't breed till they are 29 years old, and then every 3-4 years.  There are multiple fathers.
There is a critical sand temperature range from 25 tom 32 degrees C, with sex determined by temperature.  Climate change will have an impact.
Volunteers assist with the relocation of "doomed eggs" and sometimes helping hatchlings. There are many predators from crabs, fish and foxes - the latter controlled by exclusion netting. Problems around artificial light.  Buddina and Shelly the main beaches

Thanks Kate & Leisa

Directors

Neville reported on RYDA.  We have 2350 students in Caloundra this year.  Support is needed.  The road toll is up across the board but youngsters are improving. It costs $5,000/day to run (13 days this year) funded by grants.  Future funding to be organized statewide.  Sue - the volunteer sheet is going round

Darryl - NZ bubble bubbling 5000 people yesterday

Kath - Peace Pole in person

Richard - free bags and disposable scapels nabbed for birthing kits

Why did Wally wear stripes? ... So he wouldn't be spotted

And in other news ...
................................................................................
Good morning to all,

I wish to thank the Board for their faith in this concept and the offer of a Donation of $500 to set up the Caloundra Information Hub.

After the meeting at our home on Wednesday the 14th April we do now have a Steering Committee comprising of 7 people.

Richard Doodson from our club has accepted the Interim position of Chair of the committee, Judy McArdle as an Independent as Interim Secretary, myself as Treasurer. Frank Gower APSL, Ken Mewburn TAPP, Leslie Muir Events Centre,
Dorothy Gillingham Repair It Cafe make up the Committee.

It has been suggested to me that the Hub can be utilised under the Banner of the Rotary Club of Caloundra as was done with the Caloundra Men’s Shed until such time that it can run by itself as did the Men’s shed.

I am asking the Club for it’s support and help in facilitating this.

Yours in Rotary

Bernie
