On Tuesday 22nd August, President Richard Perry, with Judy Dearsley and Jaye Howie, attended Plimmerton Rotary Club meeting, to witness the presentation by District Governor, Mitch Brown.  A cheque for $22,000, that was raised by Clubs within the district, including ours, was presented to the Gillies McIndoe Research Institute.

The cheque was received on its behalf by Swee Tan, who is one of our Honorary Members.  The funds will be used to provide overseas study scholarship for a young female scientist employed by the Institute.  She will go to the U.S. to observe the aspects of stem cell research being developed there.  As Members will be aware, Swee Tan and his team have been pioneers in the area of cancer cure research.

The meeting was vibrant, attended by approximately 80 people, including many visitors.  The presentation was followed by a very interesting address by a Met Office forecaster, illustrating the huge number of sources from which they now derive their prediction data.  He said the Met Office now nearly always forecasts the type of weather correctly - it’s just the time of arrival and the intensity they still have difficulty with!
