Its been a busy week for our team involved in Youth activities starting with our RYLA Chair Mike Williamson backed by his right hand Sue, attending the Newmarket Club’s celebration of their long involvement with RYLA. A large group of RYLAIANS from this year’s event presented a very interesting account of their learnings and experiences. The extremely well attended event saw the Camp Mum Georgie Harvey awarded a Paul Harris award, so well deserved for a wonderfully inclusive and supportive wife to PDG Roger our DG in 2016/17. This role of camp Mum is a biggie and Georgie was so well loved by all and it’s easy to see why. Congratulations from us all.

PDG Ron Seeto asked if we were using the Cancer Fundraising Tea towels that his daughter Ruby designs and markets and I could not answer that. Does anyone know if we have purchased any for this purpose?

Roger Goldstone and I enjoyed a very productive visit to Papakura High where we met with Kent Christenson who is a Social Coordinator  employed by the School to enhance the social interaction across all of the streams of activity. Just the right man to introduce him to our Rotary Youth Programmes and he was extremely keen to assist. We presented some material regarding setting up an Interact Club at PHS and he was absolutely supportive, so we can now press ahead with a plan to set up a Club with the blessing of Principal John Rohs.

Papakura High School has been fortunate to introduce a Police Academy and is one of only three to be set up in Auckland and a fantastic opportunity for any students considering the Police Force as their career. We are hopeful that their Lead teacher Lisa Mortimer and the team will present their experiences to our club on August 29th.  Of interest our new Police Area Commander is David Glossop who was a Papakura Rotary sponsored GSE Team member a few years ago, absolute proof of the value of Rotary’s International Exchanges.

Roger is also well on the way with seeking candidates for the next Science and Technology Forum 11-25th Jan 2020 and PHS have a couple of top students to interviewed and processed.

Sadly the Interact Trivia / Quiz Night due last Friday night had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers however the Chair Peter Williams has sent out a request to all Schools seeking a more suitable time, perhaps a Sunday . Peter puts a lot of work into this function and has done for years and is to be congratulated for his efforts however time will tell if it is actually wanted by the Schools/Students.  Any comments appreciated to the Youth Committee Director Iain Smith.
