Fit60 started the week with a session run by ex-All black Keven Mealamu, it was a great start to the week, this was followed by Boxfit run by the trainers from Super city fitness and a circuit class ran at the Papakura leisure centre. The sessions this week saw a significant increase in intensity.
Louisa Wall the MP for Mangere shared her story with the students which was captivating and inspiring.

Yuliya Schamrel shared her journey from Russia to Africa to New Zealand and discussed a model of happiness, and discussed the IKIGAI people from Japan.

Monday 19th August
Smash Bros – Emma & Floyd

Wednesday 21st August
PK Pools - Kirsty
Guest Speaker : Suzanna RANGI (Fisher & Paykel)
Friday 23rd August
BOXFIT  - Kayne

The week started with a bang!  Emma from ‘Smash Bros’ (located inside the New York Fitness gym on Elliot Street) delivered a tough training session.
Battle ropes, boxing, box jumps and burpees are a few exercises completed in this session and sweat angels were definitely made on the floor that morning.
Emma was very complimentary about the students energy, labelling it the best group she has ever taught.

Wednesday was a trip to the Massy Park swimming pools where disaster nearly struck with both instructors out sick, Kirsty (seen in the photo below) was brought in on short notice and provided an exciting steady workout in the pool. We ended the session with a ‘Massy Park’ relay where you were partnered off, dived into the 25m pool, swam to the end, slid down the hydro slide and ended with either a ‘bomb’ or jump into the deep pool. A few students were not confident in the water however participated in all activities, some stating “I never knew swimming could be fun”. It was a mad rush back to Rose Hill college to get changed and ready for Suzanna RANGI who was the guest speaker for the week. Suzanna is the director of Talent Leadership Consultants (TLC), she spoke about positivity and what can come from adversity.

Friday was an early start, at 5:30am we were out the Rosehill gates headed to Supercity Fitness located on Druces Road, Wiri. A Boxfit session that pushed us all to our limits. If sweat angels were made on Monday, Sweat pools were definitely made in this session. Warm up was taken by Kayne which incorporated boxing and  strength work (this felt more like the main set).
If that didn’t kill us we were introduced to the dreaded ‘12 Rounds’.
You were partnered up, 1 person did the ‘Round’ exercise while the other did a cardio exercise lasting for 2 minutes, then you swapped (lasted for 45 minutes). To taunt us mentally, the trainers walked around yelling that there was a bell that can be rung to end our suffering. WE ALL wanted to ring that bell!

This session showed a lot of character and tenacity in the students as much as they wanted to give up, not one person rang that bell!!

Monday 26th August
Smash Bros – Emma & Floyd

Wednesday 28th August
Rock Climbing
Guest Speaker: Nil
Friday 30th August
Yoga  - Janene

We were straight into it on Monday morning with Floyd from ‘Smash Bros’ delivering a boxing routine that incorporated all the students working in their Sections initially. The 4 teams had five different exercises to do, doing 1 minute rounds of squats, push ups, boxing and star jumps. Then they all paired up and completed numerous boxing moves with one partner boxing and the other holding the pads. Lastly, everybody lay down in a line and did a series of exercises, all having to keep up with each other in the line! This certainly wasn’t an easy task as getting the timing right proved to be quite a challenge with the range of fitness levels. They all worked well as a team and were encouraging each other along the way. There were a lot of very sweaty and tired students after this session, a great way to start their week.

On Wednesday we had a trip to the Red Hill Community centre where Rockin’ Rock Climbing is situated. Some of the students had never done this before and those who hadn’t were keen to get in there and give it a go. The wall had 8 different levels so there was something for everyone, even for those who were quite reluctant. The students paired up and were either climbing or lowering the other down once they had made it to the top. While they didn’t get too much of a sweat on, it was a great full body workout. Unfortunately our guest speaker was unable to make it to this session so rescheduled till the following week.

On Friday morning we went to the Yoga Clinic in Papakura. Our lovely host Janene, arrived at the clinic extra early to warm up the room for the students. They started off doing some standard yoga poses until they warmed up. It didn’t take long before the heat pump was turned off and the windows were opened, I don’t think they realised how hard yoga could be! There were half dogs and full dogs and all sorts of weird names for the various poses. The students said the highlight of the morning was when they got to lay down with a blanket for 7 minutes at the end and meditate, although I’m sure most of them just enjoyed the quiet time to relax after most of their legs were burning!
