Rotary District Governor Don Sword will be visiting Halifax Harbourside for an official District Governor’s Visit.  Area Governor Barbara Pate will also attend, and will bring Fred Fox from the Terry Fox Foundation as a special guest.

Don will bring greetings from 2017-18 RI President Ian Riseley and introduce his theme for 2017-18 “Rotary: Making A Difference”. Don will also report on how the District is working to continuously improve and succeed by practicing the 3 C’s - “Continuity, Consistency and Collaboration”. Plus, he will speak about his “P.I.P.E.” Dreams for the District and how Halifax Harbourside can play a part in advancing Public Image, Peace and Environment.

Don grew up NB and NS, graduating from Halifax West High School and earning Commerce and Law degrees from Dalhousie University. After university, Don moved to NL and practiced law in St. John’s for 33+ years, 28 as a corporate counsel, first for Fishery Products International (7 years) then at Johnson Inc., Atlantic Canada’s largest insurance organization. Don retired in June 2013.

Don was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast in 1989 and was Club President in 1993-94. Don has also served as District Secretary and Assistant Governor. Don played key roles in developing Topsail Beach Rotary Park and Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre, and also helped organize the RYLA on the Rock held at Memorial University in August 2015. A Paul Harris Fellow since 1997, Don is a monthly donor to the Rotary Foundation and has as a result recognized his mother, father, wife and brother as PHF’s.

Since retirement Don has continued to be an active volunteer within and outside of Rotary and, together with his wife Pat, enjoys walking the extensive trail systems in their community.

Welcome Don!
