Notes from the Rotary Meeting 12.30pm Thursday, July 23 2020
President Chris welcomed Rotarians to the lunch meeting at the Glynmill Inn before the Rotary grace was said and lunch served.
Club Business
Club Meeting Times
Chris spoke of the discussion at the recent executive meeting regarding Club meeting times. He informed everyone that a survey will be sent out to members asking for possible different times to meet. He hopes that in September one meeting will be held at a different time to enable Rotarians who find Thursday lunch time difficult to attend, able to attend a meeting
Fund Raising Projects
Chris reviewed the executive meeting discussion regarding fundraising in the coming year. The possibilities in hosting a live Auction and gala will depend on the covid situation and can’t be planned at the moment.
Alternative Ideas suggested:-
1. Online Auction
2. Wine tasting at the Rotary Arts Centre:- The RAC would need to be consulted on this possibility.
3. Online cooking/wine-tasting session
4. Vesey Seeds spring bulb/seed campaign
Any other suggestions would always be welcome for consideration
Rotary Polio Tulip Project
Olaf informed everyone that in total 1900 boxes of bulbs have been sold with the Club having sold 163. This makes the Club the best seller in districts 7810 and 7820. Six Rotarians are super sellers and will each receive a Rotary facemask at a later meeting.
Rotary Invoices
Jackie informed everyone that invoices for bi-annual dues have been sent out.
Kids Eat Smart Foundation
Chris showed the plaque and thank you letter received from the Kids Eat Smart Foundation letter acknowledging the Rotary Club of Corner Brook as a Bronze Partner 2019-20 for the donation made last year.
Program Rotarian Jackie Chow, CEO of the Corner Brook Port Corporation, gave a most informative and interesting illustrated presentation on the port authority and the new project in which it is now involved.
She began by identifying its board members and its three lines of business, Cruise Tourism, Real Estate and Industrial Operations. She then focussed on the new industrial operation at the Port. After much planning, this had begun with the offloading of the new eco-efficient Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane, Hyster Reach Stackers and Mafi Shunter Trucks on April 27 2020 delivered by BBC Austria. She showed a short video of this challenging offloading. In May the MSC, Mediterranean Shipping Company, began a new international container service to Corner Brook by positioning empty containers at the port. This enables shipments of paper and other goods to be exported directly internationally and this service will be expanded over time.
Jackie went on to explain the next step will be to have a two way service with filled containers both entering and leaving the port. Another need that is being addressed is a better cold storage facility required so sea foods could be stored in the area before being shipped directly throughout the world.
She finished her presentation by answering questions before being thanked by Verbon.
