What is a ShelterBox - come find out
A ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and aid to families affected by natural disaster and conflict.
 
Join us at the Ferragosto Fair on the 20th August from 10am to 5pm in Great North Road to see a display of a Shelterbox - the emergency housing for thousands of disaster victims across the globe including the recent devastating quakes in Turkiye and Syria. 
 
The internationally known relief organisation and one of Rotary’s key partners, originated as a Rotary club project that aimed to help 8-10 families a year. It has since served more than 2 million people worldwide.

We are turning fifty 
This year our club has celebrated our  fifty anniversary. Our first club meeting was held on 16th April 1973. 
 
Since then the  Club has developed a rich tradition of involvement in the local community, from its award winning restoration of Rodd Point and the Cross and Tomb, to participation in many local projects and events. We look forward to celebrating our milestone birthday with all our friends and partners throughout our district and community.

Congratulations to Rotarians across Australia
Each year individuals across Australia are recognised for their contribution to the nation.
 
The Australia Day 2023 Honours List recognised and celebrated 1,047 recipients, including 736 in the General Division of the Order of Australia and awards for meritorious, distinguished and conspicuous service.
 
There are numerous Rotarians included in this list and we at Five Club congratulate our fellow rotary members on their well deserved recognition.
Supporting mental health

The Concord Centre for Mental Health - Jara Unit for older persons

While there were no 'hole in ones' everyone had fun at our Annual Charity Golf held again at the Concord Golf Club.

Twenty eager teams - each with four players - teed off around the 18-hole championship course for an event aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues and the work done at the Concord Centre for Mental Health's Jara Unit. 

Dr Kerryn Loftus, psychogeriatrician and senior staff specialist at the Centre addressed players, family members and friends at the post game dinner detailing the mental health care provided at the 30-bed Jara Unit, a facility designed for older persons aged 65 years and over, with acute mental health needs. 

    Our mental health 

    • More than 44%, or 8.6 million Australians aged 16–85 are estimated to have experienced a mental disorder at some time in their life.
    • 1 in 5 (21%, or 4.2 million) having experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months.
    • Depression is common throughout the Australian population, and older people are more likely to experience contributing factors such as physical illness or personal loss.
    • It is thought that between 10 and 15 per cent of older people experience depression and about 10 per cent experience anxiety.
