Drs. Brian Abery and Renata Ticha – U of M

Applied Behavioral analyst to meet with the group.  Presentation on Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS) which includes both Academic Supports and Behavioral Supports (Positive Behavioral Interventions and supports).

Drs. Abery and Ticha’s connection with the Russian Federation all started with their being introduced to special education faculty from Krasnoyarsk through Greg's involvement in an Open World exchange.  Conversations during the exchange led them to travel to Krasnoyarsk where they presented at a conference hosted by the Krasnoyarsk Ministry of Education and Teacher Training and learned more about their special education system.  Based on that visit, they discovered that both of our countries are, in a similar manner, struggling to meet the educational needs of child with significant disabilities especially as they relate to assessing whether our efforts to provide instruction with respect to the acquisition of basic academic skills.  This led to the subsequent crafting of a memorandum of agreement between the University of Minnesota (UMN) and Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical University (KSPU) to engage in collaborative work focused on developing technology-aided, curriculum-based measures of academic progress for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

They also attended and presented at an educational conference at the end of October 2015 in Krasnoyarsk

Whether addressing the issues of early childhood or assisting youth in making the transition from high school to work, parents on PACER's staff share their experiences and their knowledge with others so that all Minnesota's children with disabilities may have a better future.

                                                White Bear Lake Public Schools

The White Bear Lake Area School District serves all or parts of Birchwood, Gem Lake, Hugo, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake and White Bear Township, with four Early Childhood program locations (birth-K), nine elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), a two-campus high school (9-12), an Area Learning Center and a Transition Education Center. The school district, with a total population of approximately 50,000 residents, serves approximately 8,900 students PreK-12. The district also offers adult basic education, community education classes, recreation offerings and a senior program.

White Bear Lake Area Schools provides a comprehensive program for students with disabilities. Services are provided to students who range in age from birth through high school, with some students receiving services until age 21. Most students receive services in their neighborhood school and when possible in their regular class setting.

All services are developed to facilitate each student in reaching his or her potential. Inclusive education between regular and special education allows for the opportunity to learn and develop in an age-appropriate setting. From early intervention to community-based vocational training, students are provided a quality, individualized education program (IEP) in the least restrictive environment.

Each school in the system has a special education team who provides services to students with a variety of handicapping conditions. A lead teacher is available at each school to assist students and families in the Special Education Program.
