GUEST SPEAKER: Colin Carrie, PM Oshawa Riding & fellow Rotarian
Introduced by Dave Andrews: Colin needs very little introduction to The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood We have had the pleasure of hearing Colin speak to our Rotary Club on several occasions.
Over the years, Colin has also been a big contributor, to our annual Reverse Draw, Dinner, and Silent Auction Night. He buys a ticket every year, when asked and even contributes annually to our door prizes for our big event. We thank you every year for your generous assistance to The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, each and every year. He also hosts a BBQ after the clean up of Downtown Oshawa, every year and he has helped us pack food for Kids Against Hunger.
And now we can proudly call him fellow Rotary Club member Colin Carrie.
Tonight , he is part of our civic leaders presentations to our Rotary Club. This is our chance to get to know our community just a little bit better as we listen to our civic leaders tell us what’s going on in Oshawa. Tonight, he is going to update our club members, as our Member of Parliament for the Oshawa Riding, and hear what is happening in Oshawa and in Ottawa.
You all know that Colin is the proud son of a career Naval officer . He is a graduate of Oshawa’s RS McLaughlin CVI, Colin earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Waterloo and graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1989.
He returned to Oshawa where he established a practice and began a family. Colin and his wife Elizabeth have three children. Colin has always been deeply involved in his community of Oshawa, and in the rest of our country too. Before entering politics, Colin had one of the leading chiropractic and wellness clinics, in the City.
Colin was first elected to represent Oshawa in June 2004, and was re-elected in January 2006, October 2008, May 2011, October 2015 and again in October 2019.
Colin has had the privilege of serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers of Industry, and Health and Environment, during his time in Parliament. In the 42nd Parliament he served as the Official Opposition Critic for Health and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Canada-U.S. Relations. He continues to be deeply involved in all aspects of our national and international industrial, trade and regulatory policies. In the current Parliament, Colin serves as the Shadow Minister for Canada-U.S. Relations and the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario In Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition.
And then along came COVID-19 and our world changed.
I asked Colin tonight to tell us more about how our community is coping with COVID -19 and some of the things he and his team are doing to assist those in need. Please join me in welcoming Fellow member of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parwkoood and Member of Parliament for Oshawa, Dr Colin Carrie.
Colin’s Remarks:
Colin began his remarks with a glowing tribute to Devon Biddle say “knowing Devon made me a better person, and a better Rotarian”.
During the pandemic Colin kept his office open and he thanked his staff for helping the citizens of Oshawa with their questions.
Colin helped with the repatriating of Canadians who couldn’t get home when the borders closed. There were 100 citizens caught in that mess.
Colin is sitting on a Task force on human trafficking mostly along the 401 corridor.
He mentioned how proud he was of GM retooling to make PPE to help front line workers.
He mentioned Erin O’Toole as his new leader and he can’t wait to get to work holding the government to account.
During questioning he mentioned that he sits on a joint commission with US reps monitoring Great Lake water levels.
He also he is happy with his role as Can/US relation_ committee.
When asked if he thought Gov’t would call a snap election, he didn’t want one right away but he thought the Canadian Gov’t should be declared an essential service.
When asked is there any area of Oshawa that needs more help he mentioned Simcoe Hall Settlement House, The Refuge, and the Back Door Mission.
He indicated he is afraid of what might happen when the gov’t assistance runs out.
Colin was thanked by fellow Rotarian Eric Guernsey.
