FUNDRAISER # 2:  CHRISTMAS TREE SALES AT OSHAWA CENTRE – BACK ON:

President Sue found out very late on Tuesday Nov 17, that the Holiday Haven has been cancelled outside at the Oshawa Centre, by the management at the Oshawa Centre, out of concern for the safety of everyone during the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank the Oshawa Centre, Oshawa Rotary Past President and Chair of the event, Emmy Iheme, for all of their planning and kind invitation to join them. Since the trees were already cut, we bought them. THE SALE IS BASCK ON AT THE OSHWA CENTRE. The good news is that the Oshawa Centre will allow us to set up in the northwest parking lot near the old Sears store. We have been asked by the Rotary Club of Oshawa to re-join them in selling Christmas trees , outside, every day from Dec 2 to 24, with the shifts Monday thru Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Our goal: Sell 100 trees, with profits of $3,000 split between our two clubs. Trees will come wrapped from Prestonvale Tree farm (same supplier that RC Bowmanville uses) – different kinds of trees at different selling prices.  We will need everyone in our club to help. And we can use and need students too who would like to volunteer and receive their community hours. President Sue will be calling you to ask you to volunteer and she has sent to all of us the updated volunteer time and date list. (all outside). Thank you all. Lots of fun and friendship between our clubs.  We need a generator for the lights. Help. And we need volunteers to help sell. Shifts are as follows: Dec 2 to 24 Monday thru Saturday (11 am to 2 pm: 2 pm to 4:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 7 pm: And on Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm; 1 pm to 3:;30 pm and 3:30 pm to 6 pm) .  We invite you to find a family and donate a tree to them we will deliver.

FUNDRAISER # 3:  DINNER ORDER & PICKUP FROM BISTRO 238:

President Sue and her committee are looking at having a VIRTUAL DINNER with Bistro 238 in the near future (likely in the new year).  It may even be on an ongoing basis, every two weeks. This will be pick up and / or delivery. We will need volunteer drivers for one evening, every two weeks. Please let President Sue know as soon as you can. Lots to planning taking place for this new fundraiser. We need your help. Be sure to check out the Bistro 238 website for a sample of their offerings: https://www.bistro238.com/.

Hello fellow Rotarians and spouses ! Do you remember playing the "Alphabet Game" on long road trips? Do you remember playing "Guess Who?" So many of you have worked so hard because Rotarians are do-ers! Shall we have a night to have fun over zoom while also contributing a small amount to our chapter? $5 to join, (please e-transfer $5 per person to treasurer Bill by DEC 12 at the latest.) winner takes 3/5 of the pot.

Each participant can ask one question to the one in the hot seat. The one in the spotlight will only answer "Yes" or "No". After all of us have had our turn in the spotlight, we write down our answers and reveal at the same time.

The top 5 will proceed to the next level - the "Alphabet Game". Highest scorer(s) will go first.  I will name the latter and category. Each contestant will name something in that category that starts with the said letter, 10 seconds per contestant. We will carry on until all but one is eliminated.

HAPPY THOUGHTS:

Janice – She and Kris, even through the COVID pandemic,  have opened their clothing store, Krishlyn Designs, online. (see: https://www.krishlynndesigns.com/ ). They have signed up 5 boutiques who will be selling too. They will also  have a boutique set up in McLaughlin Square,50 Richmond St W in Oshawa, right beside Linda Porrit’s office and across the hall from Leon Efraim’s law office,  the third week of January too. In the rrue spirit of Rotary Kris and Jan have decided , very early on that 5% of all sales go to  the The Rotary Foundation

David Penney – Happy to Jan as the model on the Facebook posts. Fantastic.

Kris – COVID was a setback to the opening but the online outlet will be most impressive.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Past District Governor Ted Morrison & David Penney – The Rotary Foundation

Dave Andrews introduced Ted, Although we are just one day removed from November, which is Rotary Foundation month when Rotary Clubs all over the world, focus their efforts on supporting The Rotary Foundation, Our very own Past District Governor, Ted Morrison, is one of the most sought after speakers at Rotary Club meeting in District 7070. How lucky we are to have Ted in our Club. Be sure to check out the District 70790 website and see Ted talk about the Rotary Foundation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jMhq0F3iXg&feature=youtu.be

David Penney: Our Club Director for The Rotary Foundation:

David noted that we have a goal of $1500 for donations to the Polio Fund of the Rotary Foundation. As ou Oct 31, we have $791 donated. He also noted that we have a goal of $1500 for the Annual Programs Fund. We are at $5,970 and rising. Well done Rotarians.

David said that you can look at your own donations by going to the rotary.org website, get into myrotary , and under the Rotary Foundation tab , look for reports and go from there.

Ted’s Remarks:

Ted noted how fortunate we have been for many years to have Devon in our club. His contributions to The Rotary Foundation have been exemplary. We all miss Devon and it is out run to step up to the plate and make our donations.

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world.

Ted noted The mission of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty…. The key word is “enable”. The Rotary Foundation enables us to do Rotary projects worldwide.

Ted talked us through The Rotary Foundation's seven AREAS of FOCUS which help us to prioritize and address some of the world's most critical needs and are as follows: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development and Supporting the Environment .

Ted noted that when we joined Rotary, we found out about the duties of a Rotarian: pay our dues on time, attend as many meetings as possible, service on committees, and to support The Rotary Foundation.

Ted talked about how well of Rotary District 7070 of 55 clubs in central Ontario are doing , ranking very high in Canada and in the Rotary world in our givings to the Annual Programs Fund and to the Polio Fund.

Giving Made Easy:  Whether you choose to make a one-time, recurring, or matching gift, it’s easy to give to The Rotary Foundation.

Online Giving Visit rotary.org/donate to make a one-time or recurring gift online.

Rotary Direct Support our work year-round by making a recurring gift through Rotary Direct. You choose how much and how often you want to give. It’s a simple and secure way to make a big impact. Visit my.rotary.org/rotary-direct.

Matching Gifts Double the good your gift can do by having your employer match it. Visit rotary.org/matchinggifts or ask your human resources department about your company’s matching gifts and volunteer grants programs.

He encouraged us to give to both funds and encouraged us to give to EREY (Every Rotarian, Every Year), suggested at $100 per year , but it can be as much as you choose (even $10, $20, or $30). It is tax deductible and voluntary.

The Rotary Foundation gave our grants worldwide to clubs to help with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our club did just that and made a donation to Feed The Need Durham. In fact, the Rotary Foundation gave out $21 million worldwide.

Ted said that The Rotary Foundation relies on YOU.

Ted summed up his remarks by saying that “if you believe in Rotary, it is the Rotary Foundation that keeps Rotary alive”.

Janice thanked Ted and said how fortunate we are to have Ted in our club.

Kris Sachdeva added that he will be asking Nevine Yassa of the Scarborough Rotary Club to be a speaker on a grant project: ROOTA, in the new year. See: https://rotary7070.org/stories/rotary-icc-promotes-awareness-through-art-culture.
