SARGEANT-AT-ARMS REPORT: BOB KOSKI

Sgt At Arms Bob Koski current events topic for today was the Alberta – saskatchewan flow of oil into BC and larry Hurren won the big question and he won some moisturizing lotion. Well done Larry and thanks very much Sgt Bob. Sgt Bob also talked about the “weather” getting us down , but also remindeed us to wear our Rotary pins, whenever we can. This week, he received a $ 1 donation from those who did not wear their Rotary pin to the meeting and suggested that it would be $2 next week, $4 the week after and $8 the week after that for those chronic forgetters.

ACE OF SPADES DRAW

Larry Hurren drew the King of Spades. As a consolation, I wonder if Dr. Larry Hurren received two tubes of tooth paste, from himself?

HAPPY TOONEYS:

Janice – looked after the aftercare for a family this week at Destefano's. The family chose destefano's beacuse their disabled daughter rode at Windreach fram and they knew that Destefanos are big supporters of Windreach farm.

Sue – decided to payan installment for not wearing her Rotary oin this week, and since she was going to be away, she decided to add a few twoonies more.

Adrian Betts – was happy for another birthday. He got a phone call from his Mother who is in a nursing home in Stouffville and remembered his birthday. His Mom suffers from Alzheimers.

Hilda – Happy that the weather just has to get better real soon.

Stanley – made a donation for not wearing his Rotary Pin, and told us about his trip to the UK (Birmingham), Belgium, Munich, Rome and Milan and the Vatican. He noticed that, at the Vatican, there were many police, where Stanley worked for many years. He confronted the police and a crowd gathered around. Good news. Stan is back in Oshawa with us.

Bob Stewart – did not have a religious experience like Stanley but almost. Affter watchingthe leafs losing, he decided to check out the horses at Woodbine, and placed a wager by boxing a few horses in an exactor. He watched the race and Bob “almost” won.

David Penney – got his wife's car in for an oil change and the snow tires change to the all season tires, a few days too early, and when he got home, he realized that Jan was right again.

Robert Kipling – remembers a time when he was in Turkey, he flashed his Ontario Driver's license in the air and got into the Canadian Embassy.

Ted - “Go leafs Go !!!”, and told us he coud not get out of his house until the ice had subsided on the weekend. Once the salt worked, he got out after 2 days and the ice just “lifted” away.

AND several more donations for forgetting to wear the Rotary Pin.

ROTARY MOMENT:

none tonight

GUEST SPEAKER:

VP Linda Porritt introduced our guest speaker, Adrian Betts, the executive Director of the AIDS Committee of Durham Region. With April 28 being the day of the Rotary Poker Walk for AIDS in Toronto and in Belleville, she thought that having Adrian with us today, just might get donations and supporters to help out AIDS here in the Durham region and beyond. Adrian has been associated with the AIDS Committee in Durham since 1989 and came to our Rotary Club to speak in 2009. He is also the recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award for all of his work with AIDS clients and the public , here in Durham Region and beyond.

When Adrian Betts was diagnosed with AIDS 20 years ago, he thought he was going to die. But, with the support of AIDS organizations similar to the AIDS Committee of Durham Region, he survived. They were able to help him find a voice when he was really afraid. They treated him like a human and not like a disease. Today, Mr. Betts is the executive director of the AIDS Committee of Durham Region and helps give other people living with HIV/AIDS a voice.

The HIV/AIDS support and prevention outreach organization in Durham Region celebrates its 25th anniversary on April 6.

Adrian noted that the HIV/AIDS rates in the region have dropped by almost 10 per cent since 2005. Research done by the Ontario HIV Treatment Network shows between 1987 and 2011, community-based AIDS organizations prevented more than 16,500 infections in Ontario.

He said that two volunteers started the ACDR in 1991. Now the organization has grown into a fully staffed operation with more than 300 clients and offers resources such as counselling and food to those affected with the disease.

Although the organization has grown, the stigma surrounding the disease has remained, he added. HIV/AIDS diagnosis shoves someone so far into the closet. They don’t know how to share information with people. This stigma creates shame that the organization continues to fight against everyday. No one deserves this disease, but people think we did something to deserve it, so whether you were infected today or 30 years ago, the stigma is still the same.

The AIDS Committee of Durham region is an organization that provides support and advocates for individuals, families and groups infected or affected by HIV/AIDS in the Region of Durham . About 650 people , aged 2 to 89 are affected with AIDS in the Region.

There are five HIV at-risk populations in Ontario: gay and bisexual men, African and Caribbean Ontarians, people who use injection drugs, Aboriginal Peoples, and women (who are members of the above populations or engage in HIV risk activity with them).

They assist people through workshops, and classes to help clients cope with life and also to promote the prevention of the disease, and promote a healthy lifestyle. Durham has the fastest growing rate of HIV AIDS in Ontario. Here in Durham, the fastest growth of HIV AIDS is with white women in their 50's and in young black women aged 16 to 25.

The ACDR (AIDS Committee of Durham Region), has several prevention campaigns , particularly with young children and teens. By bringing the kids aged 18 to 25 together, they see they are not alone and this helps lessen the shock as the kids transition from the hospital care system to adult clinics. Linking kids together , peer to peer has proven to be a success.

Adrian urged all of us to go on the Rotary District 7070 Poker Walk for AIDS on April 28, help raise funds and awareness. Proceeds will fund international and local initiatives by participating Rotary Clubs and NGO's to win the war on HIV/AIDS through education, prevention, treatment, support for orphans, surviving guardians and people living with AIDS. In addition, communities stricken by HIV/AIDS will be assisted in overcoming shortages of drinking water, food, or shelter – essential for recovery and a sustainable future. 50 % of what our club raises can go locally right here in Durham Region.

Adrian thanked Vice presidnet Linda , as she is trying to help Adrian reloate the AIDS Comittee of Durham , to a new premesis, as the new landlord kicked them out of their current premesis they have held for a very long time. Linda is helping and receiving no fee for her assistance, because she is a Rotarian.

Rotarian Sonya Thompson thanked Adrian Betts for enlightening presentation on the size and scope of AIDS in Durham Region and the work that his committee does to help clients and keep the public informed.
