ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

Past Pres Dave AndrewsWorld Polio Day 2018, hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood, will be held right on the date, Wednesday October 24, 2018 at Durham College in the new Global Classroom of the new Centre for Collaborative Education. So far the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa, Oshawa-parkwood, port Perry and Port Hope have canceled their regular weekly meetings that week. Dave urged everyone to attend this grand event. Please register here at the District Website, as soon as you can. All of the Clubs in Durham Region have been invited and urged to register as soon as possible. The cost for the event will be $25 with a portion of the ticket price going to the Rotary Foundation's PolioPlus Program and will be credited towards your next Paul Harris Fellow. A light luncheon will be served and there will be a cash bar. There will be a fellowship time from 5:00 pm to 5:45pm followed by a welcome from Durham College and from Rotary District Governor Mary Lou Harrison. At 5:45pm, we will feed in the live stream Rotary Polio Program, righta after the intros with the live Rotary International program from Philadelphia this year from 6 to 6:45 pm . We will then continue to broadcasting live from Oshawa. During this live Oshawa portion, the two Rotary Club Presidents from Oshawa will receive their Proclamations from the Mayor of Oshawa, and the 10 Rotary Club Presidents and District Governor Mary Lou Harrison will receive their Proclamations from the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Durham. Dr. Bob Scott, the immdeiate Past Chair of the Rotary International PolioPlus Committee will bring us up to date and hoepfully , bring in some of his associates from the Polio stricken countries , again, live. Questions and answers will follow and then an after-party, finishing at 9 pm. The entire event will also be available, by computer, through a URL for any Rotary Club in the world to view. In addition, the broadcast will be sent live all over the world, to the colleges and universities on the Durham College Global Classroom network.

 

Hilda Finnigan met a young lady, Monique Masoud, at a retail store in Oshawa recently. It turns out the she is a student at Durham College and doing part time work. She rememberrs getting 2 drops of the polio vaccine in Pakistan when she was a young girl and she has agreed to come to World Polio Day and tell us her story.

Kim Boatman – An update from the Youth Services Committee – We ask that all Rotary club members consider volunteering or be looking for suitable host families for Youth Exchnage. We are partnering with the Rotary Club of Oshawa to host and send out an exchange student.

Pres Linda - District 7070 Conference – Rotary Reunion in Prince Edward County – Register at http://rotary7070conference.org/ . Casual country all day and evening. 8:30 a.m. – Arrive and enjoy breakfast snacks between. All day Programming – Fun and learning through the six areas of focus. Lunch – Picnic lunch as you enjoy Reunion activities; 6:00 p.m.– Gather for the Rotary family banquet. Sunday– Prince Edward County area activities will be highlighted for personal enjoyment. The cost for the day is $99 per person. Register for the Oct 27 party at the Legion online too.

 

Past District Governor Ted - announced that the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood will have, as our guest speaker, a Rotary Peace Scholar, at our November 13 Rotay Club meeting, as part of our Rotary Foundation Month activities in November. Chenai Kadungure -a Rotary Peace Scholar - from Zimbabwe. Chenai has been involved in non-profit work since she was a teenager. In high school she was an Interact member. Interact taught her the value in “Service Above Self” and this attraction to serving the world has never left her. Chenai earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in Cape Town, where her experience of xenophobia inspired her to become a part of the solution to global conflict. She has experience in research and customer relations and has strong interpersonal skills. She has fundraised for philanthropic initiatives, and assisted NGOs, such as Open Door Education, Cycle For Understanding and The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). As a dedicated soldier for peace; Chenai volunteers for The Red Frogs, has been involved in various church leadership activities, serves on the Board of Directors of Mwala, a charity organization and she mentors in her spare time. She most recently worked for a non-profit called The Hope Factory, an Enterprise Development company owned by The South African institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) which grows people, to develop businesses and impact communities. She is committed to being “a gift to the world” and the Fellowship to study at UNC-Chapel Hill, is just the beginning for her.

Chenai holds a B.A. degree in Media, Sociology and Gender Studies and an M.Phil. in Diversity Studies from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She is currently conducting her M.A. studies in Global Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she aims to obtain the necessary skills to succeed in the international development space

Ted has asked the other clubs, who have been invited, to please let Dave Andrews know if you wish to attend and perhaps bring a guest.

 

Lennis Trotter – announced that there will be a Board and Committee meeting of the Kids' Safety Village on November 5 starting at 7:30 pm at the Kids' Safety Village.

 

REMINDER: Sue MacKinnon – We need volunteers on Oct 26 and 27 from about 4:30 pm to 8 pm to volunteer at the Halloween haunt at the Kids Safety Village. Many of our club memebrs will be at the District Cionference so that puts the onus on those not going to the conference to setep up to the plat and help with our signature project. Sign up TODAY.

 

REMINDER: Janice Coupland – Oct 30 is our Oktoberfest Party at Rotary. Spouses invited. Traditional German dishes will be seved and Brock Street Brewery will be here with Beer for Oktoberfest. A fun night. Sign up sheet went around. Please email Janice if you and your guest are coming. Editor's note: It will be Party of the Century- try not to miss it.

 

REMINDER: Past Pres Dave Andrews – We have about 50 tickets to sell on the Big Game 53 (Superbowl) tickets from the Rotary E Club of Southern Ontario Western New York - $5 each or 5 tickets for $20.00. Please let Dave know how many you would like to sell. Another excellent opportunity coming up: World Polio Day at Durham College. Can you help sell at this event? Great prizes, first being 4 nights lodging and 2 tickets to the game plus $1,000. Plus many more great prizes. Final day to have money and ticket stubs returned is November 20.

 

REMINDER: Treasurer Devon Biddle announced that our annual club dues invoice will be sent to us by email BUT you can pay right now at the front Registration Desk. Dues are $210 for the year (may be paid now or one half now and one half Jan 1, 2019). On the invoice , there will be a voluntary contribution of $100 for the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund and $20 for Polio Eradication, if you so desire to pay, and Devon will ensuire that you get credit towards your next Paul Harris Fellow Award. Spouses may pay $165 annual dues for their membership, as long as one spouse pays the $210. You can start paying TODAY at the front Registration Desk, when you come in to the meeting. Invoices will be emailed shortly.

ACE OF SPADES DRAW: Janice Coupland was the lucky winner tonight but alas, she drew the Jack of Hearts and received a consolation prize, thanks to Dr Larry Hurren. The deck gets smaller and the pot grows.
