Lennis advised about the Kid’s Safety Village meeting and Annual Meeting on November 5.
The Ajax Optimist Club will be folding at year end. Ron Mortson and Gerry Bedford will remain on the Board. The Ajax Optimist Club volunteer at a Bingo in Pickering. It’s rather easy and lucrative so Ron Mortson is checking the by-laws to see if the Kids’ Safety Village can qualify to volunteer at this bingo.
Hilda announced that we had the option to do away with the meal tickets but decided to keep them so no one forgets to pick up their badge and pay.
Lennis advised the next district conference will be at the Marriott on Lake Rousseau. It will be October 25-27, 2019. The cost for the room is $139 per evening. John Burns and Joe Solway from the Bowmanville Rotary Club, asked for our support for their concert on Sunday, December 16. Two shows, the first one is at 3:00pm and the second one is at 7:00pm. REMINDER: Past District Governor Ted - announced that the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood will have, as our guest speaker, a Rotary Peace Scholar, at our November 13 Rotay Club meeting, as part of our Rotary Foundation Month activities in November. Chenai Kadungure -a Rotary Peace Scholar - from Zimbabwe. Chenai has been involved in non-profit work since she was a teenager. In high school she was an Interact member. Interact taught her the value in “Service Above Self” and this attraction to serving the world has never left her. Chenai earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in Cape Town, where her experience of xenophobia inspired her to become a part of the solution to global conflict. She has experience in research and customer relations and has strong interpersonal skills. She has fundraised for philanthropic initiatives, and assisted NGOs, such as Open Door Education, Cycle For Understanding and The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). As a dedicated soldier for peace; Chenai volunteers for The Red Frogs, has been involved in various church leadership activities, serves on the Board of Directors of Mwala, a charity organization and she mentors in her spare time. She most recently worked for a non-profit called The Hope Factory, an Enterprise Development company owned by The South African institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) which grows people, to develop businesses and impact communities. She is committed to being “a gift to the world” and the Fellowship to study at UNC-Chapel Hill, is just the beginning for her.
Chenai holds a B.A. degree in Media, Sociology and Gender Studies and an M.Phil. in Diversity Studies from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She is currently conducting her M.A. studies in Global Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she aims to obtain the necessary skills to succeed in the international development space
