AGAIN, THANK YOU TO: our very own Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarian Eric Guernsey for arranging the Zoom Meeting sharing with Heather McMillan, Executive Director of the Durham Workforce Authority, The Durham Workforce Authority is the acknowledged provider of local workforce information and champion of workforce development initiatives unique to Durham Region. Their Mission is to produce and offer comprehensive Labour Market Information to our stakeholders, to facilitate workforce solutions by engaging community partners and employers and to encourage development and maintenance of a sustainable and dynamic workforce.. It was so nice to be able to have a whole hour for our Zoom meeting. We thank you both.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS-  

Ted  reminded all of us to tell our friends and neighbours to make a donation to our Rotary Cub to help fight COVID-19 right here in Oshawa and our club will match their donation. Thank you to Kim and Sandy for their excellent half page ad in the May 13 and May 20 editions of The Oshawa Express and the news article in the May 20 edition, announcing our big fundraiser to fight COVID-19 here in our community. Thank you for the news article too announcing the matching funds donation. Our Rotary Club will match dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $5,000, all money received from the public to go local community organizations to help them fight the COVID-19 pandemic. As individuals, we all can make a donation to help get to the $5,000 mark, and our club will match that.

 

REMINDER:

Devon is sending one check to the Rotary Foundation on June 1st. If you want to make a donation, please get your money to Devon, and he will send it to the Rotary Foundation, get you credit towards your next Paul Harris Fellow and ensure that you receive a tax donation. He will take cash or cheque.

JUNE 3 –District 7070 CONNECTS ZOOM MEETING - Rotary Foundation Update – 7 pm to 8 pm – Please register online : https://rotary7070.org/event/district-7070-connects--foundation-event/  you will be sent a Zoom link later. We are delighted to have a keynote speaker for our Wednesday Zoom meeting, Bryn Styles, RI Director 2012-14 and Foundation Trustee 2015 -17. Bryn will update us on Rotary COVID-19 efforts and the Rotary Foundation. Former District Foundation Chair, the late Bill Patchett had a dream. Just once he wanted to raise $1,000,000.00 USD for our Rotary Foundation in one Rotary year. He came close raising $806,000.00 USD one year but never realized his goal. This year in his memory we set a goal to raise $1,000,000.00 USD as a tribute to Bill. We call it “The Mil for Bill”. Join us to see how far we have come and how you might help us to reach our goal in this last month of the Rotary year. In addition, we will have updates on the Polio Plus campaign from Dr. Bob Scott and hear from our DG Beth Selby and DGE Mark Chipman. All interested District 7070 Rotarians are welcome to participate, with a special invite to any newer Rotarians who have joined in the past few years - come experience our District!  Cost is free but you need to register in order to get a link for the session.  Please register by noon on Tuesday June 2nd.  A Zoom link will be sent by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. For security reasons, we will be screening people trying to access the meeting and will only allow in those who we recognize from the registration sheet.

Ted Morrison announced that the The Rotary Club of Port Hope  Annual Lobsterfest  as a "Take Out" is SOLD OUT . Those wishing to participate, its too late . Let’s try to get our orders in early next year. Cost is $55.00 per meal (lobster and roast beef).

 The Rotary Club of  Whitby Sunrise is having their Annual Ribfest 2 U, this weekend. You can order on line and they will deliver. And lots of entertainment to watch on line too. Lots of virtual fun. https://rotary7070.org/event/whitby-ribfest-2u/

Past District Governor Ted Morrison, and current District 7070 Annual programs Fund Chair of the Rotary Foundation,  alerted everyone to the fact that Rotary International donations from our clubs and members for the Polio Fund of the Rotary Foundation needs our help. Bill and Melinda Gates are matching 2 for 1 our contributions. If Rotary puts in $50 million US, Gates will put in $100 million. We are currently short and we need your support for a donation before June 30. For every dollar we are short, that’s $2 dollars we will not get from the Gates Foundation.  

GUEST SPEAKER:  Incoming Pres. Sue McKinnon.

 Sue spoke briefly about the upcoming 20/21 Rotary Year, encouraging and reminding us that we need to consider which committees we would prefer to serve on and that each of us should be part of at least two committees. We all need to work together so that Oshawa Parkwood continues to be strong and successful.

 Discussion re our Reverse Draw and Fashion Show events - how/when to manage these. Further discussion by the Board.  Also consider how to have a Virtual World Polio Day.

 Pres. Lennis received a request for information re Kids Safety Village from a Club south of Chicago in the US.  He referred them to a Club in Atlanta. 

David Andrews will facilitate the LIVE District 7070 Public Image Draw for $500 for the Instagram Contest at the Wednesday morning meeting of the Whitby Sunrise Club.

Sue McKinnon has an idea about having a "Bake Exchange" for Canada Day - she will send out an email.

   WHAT HAVE WE BEEN DOING??

    Sandy's family from Calgary have been here visiting.  She has been unable to see her newest grandson due to the COVID.

    Heather proud that Mark will be Area Director for Toastmasters as of July 1st.

    Kris and Janice enjoyed a picnic with family while practicing social distancing.

    Sue's daughter is moving to Vancouver and will be working in the Cath Lab at  hospital there. Sue is happy to have both of     her children in the same city, great for visiting.
