and Happy Birthday to Adrian Betts, our guest speaker whose birthday was April 16. We sang the now famous Rotary Club of Indian Rocks Beach “Happy Birthday to YOU Cha Cha Cha” to Adrian.

Dave - Reverse Draw –May 10 is fast approaching Tickets available ANYTIME. It is Time to SELL - Last year we had 125 people for dinner, with 156 tickets being sold in total. This year the ticket is $125. We need YOU to help sell more tickets this year and get more Silent Auction Items to reach the profit levels that our members said was our top fundraising priority in our Visioning Exercise and also in our Strategic Plan.
Dave – With the Reverse Draw on May 10 fast approaching, we want to highlight our Silent Auction items on our Club's Facebook page and on our club website. We need your help. Dave passed around sample posters, a week ago, that are already on our club website www.rotaryoshawa-parkwood.org for you to review. When you get a Silent Auction item, take a real nice photo, get a detailed description of the item , get the name and all of the particulars about the sponsor, and get the info to Dave as soon as possible. The sponsors will like getting their names accociated with Rotary and our big event and the item they are donating. Thank you to Bob Koski who brought in a framed poster of a nice silent auction item from Skyzone. And he also got a nice service offer from Staples in Whitby. They will print posters of our silent auction items for our big event! Thank you Bob. Get your physical auction items to Ted as soon as possible.
Janice – passed around a survey for everyione to fill out their choices for “Fun and Freidnship Social Events” that we might like to do this year and next. And she asked everyone to add any new events that they may like. If you were unable to attend April 10, please see Janice for a copy of the survey to fill out.
Janice – It looks like we are a “GO” for the Innaugural Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Fashion Show, tentatively scheduled for September 30, 2018. She has been able to get confirmation that Malanie Lynn at the Oshawa Centre will be providing the fashions.
VP Linda - April 22 - Earth Day District 7070 Tree Planting – from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Get there about 10 am.
Where: Sunnybrook Health and Sciences Centre & Veterans Care Facility. 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto. This Earth Day, you have the opportunity to help plant trees towards the challenge by Rotary International President Ian Riseley that every Rotarian in the world plant a tree this Rotary Year. VP Linda - announced the City of Oshawa is hosting a Communities with Brooms event, on Wednesday, April 25. It is an initiative organized by the City (with the support of the BIA) every year and this is the 10th year for the program. There are numerous volunteers who join with staff from the City to generally pick up garbage around Downtown, along the creek etc. At the end of the 2 hour activity, Colin Carrie's office hosts a bbq for all to enjoy.VP Linda had asked Garth Johns (Executive Director of the Downtown Oshawa BIA) if the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood could focus their attention on the park across the Creek from Childrens' Arena. This is absolutely acceptable. It just requires a registration with the John Howard Society so we know who is working where and we don't end up with 2 or 3 different groups in one area bumping into each other. The clean-up is from 11am to 1pm, on the east side of the Oshawa Creek in the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens. Plan to meet at the Rotary Gazebo, at10:30 and Linda will arrange to get the garbage bags and gloves, etc. And we have a BBQ to follow afterwards, sponsored by Colin Carrie. Be sure to wear 'Rotary' clothing. This is a great Hands-On Service Project that we can do together and members of the Rotaract Club and the Oshawa Rotary Club will be participating. SIGN UP TODAY. VP Linda – the Kids Safety Village Grand Re-opening will take place on Saturday September 22. There are 5 sub-committees established . Please see Linda a volunteer to be on at least one of those committees. There will be lots for everyone to do that day and with the planning stages. If you have any ideas for a large “Thank You To Our Sponsors” board, that can be placed in the Kids Safety Village, please let Linda know .
VP Linda – Reminded everyone about the April 28 District 7070 Rotary Poker Walks for AIDS – 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at The Beach – Toronto, Leuty Pavillion, Lee Avenue and Alfresco Lawn, Toronto Ontario, Canada, M4E1A1 For Belleville , check their exact time and location on the http://rotaryaidswalk.ca/ . Our club could form a team, raise funds, go on the walk in Toronto, and help people right here in Durham Region who have AIDS. Who wants to Champion this worthy cause?
Pres Ted - April 28 - The Rotary Club of Courtice presents its Youth and Community Leaders Dinner and Dance in support of Mental Illness initatives in Clarington and Durham Regions, at the Garnet B Rickard Recreation Complex, 2440 Hwy 2, Bowmanville. Doors open at 5:30 pm, Dinner at 6:15 pm . $60 per person. Corporate tables at 8 seats for $600. To register for the event please visit the Courtice Rotary Club website. Or call 905-240-4015. Speaker: TSN's Michael Landsberg, one of Canada’s most vocal advocates for mental health awareness. Pres Ted - reminded us about the May 5 - Kids Against Hunger Meal Packing Day – At Durham College - gather your spouse, children and grandchildren too (over 8 years of age) and come out and help pack 15,000 meals . Joint project with the Rotary Club of Whitby-Sunrise. Start time at 8:30 am at “The Onion” at Durham College. We need lots of hands on help from you, your family and friends. Pres Ted - May 6 - District 7070 Rotary Foundation Million Dollar Luncheon – Scarborough Golf Club, 321 Scarborough Golf Club Road, Scarborough, ON M1J 3H2 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. Please join us for lunch and listen to our own Ron Denham talk about this exciting new Major Gifts Initiative opportunity for making a positive difference in the world. The cost for lunch is by donation of any amount to this new Major Gifts Initiative for Water and Sanitation. REMMINDER – On May 8 at 5:15 pm, Past District Governor Lars Henriksson, who is also our Rotary Foundation District 7070 Grants Committee chair, will be at a photo op and will present the District Grant to the 10 Durham Region Rotary Presdients which will be used towards the rennovation and expansion of the Kids' Safety Village. Following the presentation, Lars will be attending the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, to formally present the cheque to the Rotary Club. The Durham Region Rotary Club Presidents have also been invited to attend the photo op and the meeting, if they wish. And we have already received some favourable responses, including one from our District Governor Nominee Beth Selby. The speaker that evening will be members of our Reverse Draw Committee going over the final last-minute items for the May 10 Reverse Draw, Dinner & Silent Auction evening at the Oshawa Golf Club.Lennis also announced that the Rotary Club of Oshawa -Parkwood came in first place in the 2016-17 District 7070 Governor's Membership Challenge with a total of net 6 members from July 1, 2016 through May 31, 2017 Membership Award. And first palce include $2,500 to be use on service projects will be presented at our regular weekly meeting on May 8 by Past District Governor Jim Louttit and our Assistant Governor (also our District Governor Nominee) Beth Selby will be in attendance.
Pres Ted - May 12 - District Training Assembly BMO Institute For Learning (IFL), 3550 Pharmacy Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario M1W 3Z3 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Linda Porritt has asked all of the Board Members and Committee chairs for next Rotary year to attend and sign up on the District 7070 website. Pres Ted - JUNE 19 – RCMP Musical Ride – Two shows - 12:30 and 5:15 pm at Wiindreach Farm, 312 Townline Rd, Ashburn. Tickets . Tickets - $25 per adult, $15 per child . Arrive 1 hour prior to show time to ensure seating and parking . Visit windreachfarm.org for tickets, more information, and directions. Many Rotary Clubs in our district, including ours, has made donations to Windreach Farm, over the years. This is our chance to give back.
Pres Ted encouraged evernyone to be a “Volunteer” at the Rotary International Convention. Be sure to register to do so today. And you do not have to be registered for the Convention to volunteer. Thank you Sue macKinnon for doing just that. .
REMINDER: Lennis Trotter will order "Rotary" clothing (hats, shirts and jackets) , but he needs a minimum number - let him know if you want anything.
