Happy Bucks
Small group today so we went around letting each other know how we're doing. It was a nice chance to get better acquainted with new members Bill and Robin, and wonderful to welcome Dave Gough back.

Speaker
No speaker today, so Scott spoke about a new project that both Rotaract clubs (Ottawa and Ottawa South) are serious about undertaking. It concerns depression among youth, and using peer mentors to help create positive awareness about depression and how to seek appropriate help. The program is a Rotary International project in collaboration with Nadja Reilly, Ph.D. called Peer Leadership and Depression Prevention. A pilot project in USA, India, Nigeria and Puerto Rico has been quite successful. Bob Anthony from the Rotary Club of Wellesley in the US was quite involved and has been attending our virtual meetings.

The program will start taking shape in September when Rotaract members are back in school and meeting regularly. They plan to learn what they need to start their training sessions, and do some trial training with other university students, perhaps us. Then they will high schools in October and schedule some training with high school students. The Wellness in a Box toolkit offers a practical answer to that question for Rotary, Rotaract, or Interact members. It provides measurable outcomes and has been implemented in the USA, Puerto Rico, India and Nigeria. Teens and Rotarians introduce or co-facilitate the program with youth groups or schools. The primary resource is the Boston Children's Hospital ‘Break Free From Depression’ (BFFD) curriculum and workshop materials with web based training.

The project defines a local protocol for referral so problems identified are managed, normalizes conversation around mental wellness and illness, and includes pre- and post-surveys to measure improvements in Knowledge, Negative Attitude, and Confidence in help-seeking. RAGMHI members are available to discuss implementation options, assist with translating the supplemental slide sets and surveys, or help with grant writing to fund professional services, classroom equipment, and supplies. Helping this demographic understand that depression is ok, even natural, and how to find help if needed can have exponential impact on their lives and even society-wise. It is an exciting project and our club has pledged its support to help it be successful.

The program is based on research and a training program developed by Boston Children's Hospital Neighborhood Partnerships Program. This link to the training suitable for peer leaders, adults, and faculty. Completing the training allows all materials to be downloaded, including the BFFD manual, surveys, slide sets, handouts, documentary, and outcomes calculator.
