Meeting Notes for October 20, 2016

OPENER: Pinch hitter Barry Toby opened the meeting as substitute for Kathy Gailey. “Welcome”. R. I. President is John F. Germ and his theme is “Rotary Serving Humanity”.

 

GREETER: Chris Gallagher says: “ Patience is something you admire in the driver behind you, but not the one ahead”.

 

   PATRIOTIC SONG: Don Jones led us the Patriotic Song “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”.

 

INTERACT UPDATE: Colette Introduced Swetha from Cal High who briefed us on Interact’s activities. These included the Run for Education, The Online Auction, etc.

 

STUDENT OF THE MONTH: Erin McFerrin of Cal High Introduced Alanah Winston as Student of the Month. Alanah was instrumental in bringing an Inclusion Program to Cal High, and we were honored to meet her and her parents! It looks like there is a good chance she may become a Rotarian herself one day.

 

SILENT AUCTION: Jerry Marrs  reports the total funds raised after expenses may reach $100,000.  Social media was effective in nearly doubling bidders from last year. The winning team will be announced at a future date when all the bookkeeping is completed.

 

SIX CLUB DINNER:  The Six Club dinner will take place Wednesday October 26 at Blackhawk CC. Our club is dark on Thursday, 10/27. There are still a few tickets available.

GOLF TOURNAMENT: Guy Greco gave out the rewards for the season. Winner: John Tatum. Tin Cup: Dennis Harvey. The Bent Iron (gross golfer’s award) went to Glen Weber.

 

   FEATURED SPEAKER: Gloria Dunn-Violin spoke on the subject “Having a Life After Retirement” She says life begins “now”. We need to form a plan and to keep youth in the mind. For many, retirement threatens a loss of their ego and persona. There is often less socialization than what they experienced during their careers. The kind of schedule to which they had been accustomed is missing, etc.   Ms. Dunn-Violin advocates  planning for a life of satisfaction, self enrichment and serenity. Retirement does not mean it is “over”.  She quoted Wayne Dyer: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”.  She says “focus on how much music you can still make”.

You can plan a new life journey by changing your idea of work, improving your relationships, engaging in on-going learning, etc. All these endeavors tend to improve your health and vitality. People live longer when engaged and actually experience less memory loss.

 

   RAFFLE: Marv Remich won the Greeter’s Gift, and Don Jones won a chance to roll the dice on the progressive. But no luck.
