Our President, Colette “Lady Grizzly” Lay, opened the meeting by reminding us that the new R.I. President is Mark Daniel Maloney, of Decatur, Alabama, and his theme for the year is “Rotary Connects the World!”  Our Greeter, Mark Hornstra, led us in the Salute to the Flag and presented the Thought for the Day, by JFK:  “Ask not what your country can do for you; rather ask what you can do for your country!”

 

Mark noted that his solar projects in Uganda are moving along nicely and that he will soon be making another trip.

 

Mike Thelen, a Basso Profundo from the Blackhawk Chorus, then lead the group in the singing of the Patriotic Song, “My Country Tis of Thee!”

 

Visiting Rotarians:   None.

 

 

Other Visitors:  Lourdes Lylagan who is checking out the club for possibly joining us.  Mary Greco, wife of PP Guy Greco; Ginny Weber, wife of PP Glenn Weber; Steven Porschet and Jahak Malhotra.

 

 

Announcements: 

Guy Greco took the floor to advise us that Mike Gunning died on Monday, July 29.  A moment of silence in his memory was observed.

 

Guy also updated us on the condition of Horace Crawford  --  he is home from his foot surgery and is doing well  -- and of Tom Port  -- he is home as well after heart surgery.

 

PP Dennis Garrison announced that Club Sport of San Ramon recently celebrated its 30^th year with a party!   Congratulations to Dennis and his fine Team!

 

A very proud Lady Grizzly noted that her daughter, McKenna, won first place in a national martial arts competition in her specialty (which this Scribe still does not know how to say or spell).  In spite of getting hit pretty hard and having her arm injured, she beat the very person who robbed her of the Gold medal last year!  A ”Big Bruiser” according to Lady Grizzly!

 

Lady Grizzly also announced that the beneficiary of this year’s donations made in honor of our speakers will be the Discovery Counseling Center.

Marv Remmich introduced David Victor, founder of Harmony & Healing, a new non-profit dedicated to “Healing through the Power of Music.”

 

David brings live music to the bedsides and community spaces of patients and their loved ones in hospitals and care facilities.  Music, he stated, has been known to lower stress levels, bring about positive feelings, speed up healing and restore happiness.  It also impacts the medical staff in a similar manner.

 

David graduated from Cal State East Bay with a degree in Computer Science but soon gravitated to being a professional musician.  He was a member of the group BOSTON with whom he played at the “Boston Strong” charity concert after the Marathon bombing in 2013.

 

He has performed with several other groups and has been the lead vocalist and guitarist with shows he has created.

 

David lives in San Ramon and he will have a fund-raising concert for his new organization on March 28, 2020, at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore.  For more details, check out DavidVictor.com and/or HarmonyandHealing.org.

 

Raffle:   The Greeter’s Gift of $20.00 was won by Lady Grizzly;  the chance of drawing the gold marble was won Patti Hennigan  Unfortunately, she failed to pull out the gold marble and had to settle for $10.00 in cash!  Next week’s prize will be $330.  There are reportedly only 8 marbles left in that stupid bag!
