The “African Queen”, with only a little more than one month to go (she’s skipping town for the final countdown) opened with the, by now, well worn: “R.I. President is John F. Germ and his theme is ‘Rotary Serving Humanity’”.
 
Greeter: Ed Duarte advised: “ If you are living your life with credibility and integrity nothing else matters; if you are not living your life with credibility and integrity nothing else matters”. Ed, a retired General Contractor, is in his 30th year as a club member. He and his wife Linda, have four children and three grandchildren.
 
Patriotic Song: Hermann Welm, led us in “My country ‘tis of thee I sing…”.

Demotion Party: As our leader will be traveling abroad in June the Demotion Party will be held May 30th the Gallagher’s. Be sure to sign up. The event will be catered and the price is $50.00 per person including beer and wine.

100th Anniversary of San Ramon: Dr. Bill Harlan will give a talk on the “Harlan House; is it still standing?”  at the Museum of San Ramon on Sat., May 13 at 10:00 A.M.

Blackhawk Food Wine and Film Festival Joyce Feldman, President Elect of Danville Sycamore dropped by to promote their Blackhawk Festival fundraiser. The event will feature the wines of Livermore Valley, food samples from local fine restaurants, silent and live auctions, and their special Fund-a Cause for the Down Syndrome Connection East Bay. Featured entertainment will be: Adam Lasher – American Idol.
 
The Raffle will offer a VIP Ticket to the Indy race and a ride around the track in a true Indy racecar driven by Mario Andretti. $50.00 Donation.
 
Canine Companions for Independence was honored with a grant for the second consecutive year. Carol Weldin, from the Board of Directors, May Caplice, Development Director and Mary Pickett of the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, accompanied by “JoJo” , one of their “facility dogs” accepted the award. Canine Companions provides dogs at no cost to those needing them. They can offer “service dogs”, “skilled companion” dogs, “hearing dogs” or “facility dogs” like “JoJo”. Anyone interested to learn more is invited to visit the Training Center at 2965 Dutton Ave.,  Santa Rosa, or try info@cci.org.
 
PROGRAM  California High Stoles and Scholarships. Colette Lay presented stoles to Natalie Lee, Ji Won Kim, Emily Hui and Christina Alejandrino.
 
Scholarships were awarded to Natlie Lee, James Walker Tippett, Rachel Combs, Hailey Clark, Josh Iversen, Kristen Gao, Alanah Winston.
 
Top Honors, and $10,000, was awarded to an obviously thrilled and very emotional Ji Won Kim. She will receive $2,500 per year paid directly to her school.  JI has a top grade average, has served as an Inter-actor and has demonstrated exemplary leadership, responsibility and caring.

Mark Hornstra won the Greeter’s Gift and Norbert got a shot at the Progressive, but came up with a blue ball. Next week the prize is worth $170.00!
