ESRAG’s Case to add Environment as an Area Of Focus - What we told TRF’s Environmental Issues Task Force.

Karen Kendrick-Hands is co-founder of the Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group (ESRAG), to synergize her passions for Rotary Service and mitigating climate change and providing a way for like-minded Rotarians to collaborate. She has served as its Chair, and is currently the Director of Communications. She was the first ever Observer Delegate sent by Rotary International to the UNFCCC climate talks, attending COP24 in Katowice, Poland December 2018. On behalf of ESRAG, Karen presented to The Rotary Foundation’s Environmental Issues Task Force in Feb. 2020 in support of the creation of an Area of Focus for the environment. Karen was blessed to have been a RYE student in 1967-68 to Australia.

Karen is active with the Wisconsin Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby, and is the Co-leader of its Rotary Action Team.  When active as an attorney, she specialized in pro bono public interest advocacy in support of clean air and transportation access and mobility.

Karen has, worked as a volunteer public interest advocate for cleaner air and mobility and transportation choices, including serving on various local, state and regional advisory bodies, for over 30 years.  She has founded advocacy groups, including Transportation Riders United, assisted non-environmental community and service organizations, including the Junior League, and League of Women Voters to frame and adopt environmental positions, worked with national US groups such as the Clean Air Network, participated in an official international environmental law exchange between the US and former Soviet Union, and created community networks with unlikely partners – finding common interests where none were obvious.
