"I’m Mark O’Connor a volunteer with Surfrider San Diego. I am a lead for the Rise Above Plastic committee. I have been volunteering with Surfrider for about 4 years. I was picking up plastic debris during my beach walks and wanted to figure out how to stop the pollution. I got involved with Surfrider at about the same time when my grandson, Nolan was born and decided to devote my volunteer time to trying to make a difference on the planet by the time he was old enough to vote. I now have 3 grandkids that motivate me to keep going. Last year in November, I was appointed to the Encinitas Environmental Commission. I am also on the planning committee for the Encinitas EcoFest event to be held at Cottonwood Creek Park on Sunday, October 9th.
I have assisted cities with plastic reduction policies. I enjoy assisting other volunteers with plastic-related projects. I live in Encinitas and now focus most of my energy there. I now assist our ocean-friendly restaurant program with getting new restaurants to join. I enjoy talking to others and encourage everyone to get involved with helping the planet, if not just for ourselves but for the next generations."
