VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

There were many guests and visitors, and we had a packed house full of past Presidents for Mark Shaw’s surprise send-off party!
Those listed on the guest sheet include: Bear Cranney, Don Lavender, Malia Griffin, Deb McNulty, Chris Zorzy, David Gendall, Joy Fisher.

FINES AND RECOGNITIONS

Our lunch meeting was bittersweet celebrating the departure of valued club member, community pillar, and friend Mark Shaw. The party got off to a slow start as Mark arrived at the last minute with many believing the guest of honor might be a no show. However he did arrive, and most critically, was able to cut the cake we shared for dessert!

Jason Consalvo, Viktoria Talebian, and John Fisher all reminisced about what a great friend, neighbor, mentor, softball manager, and Rotarian Mark has been. Jason is still wondering why he earned the nickname “DuPont” when providing lackluster fielding performances. Viktoria was excited to get another hug after having a goodbye dinner and farewell hug the evening prior. John spoke to their long friendship and joked about their landlord-tenant relationship.

Tim Clarke presented Mark Shaw with his second Paul Harris Award from the Salem Rotary Club, becoming the first Salem Rotary member to achieve the award in both the 20th and 21st centuries!

SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

This week we honored member Mark Shaw. Mark and his wife, Barbara (BJ), are moving to Florida.

Mark came to the podium and was speechless – a first for him! He thanked the club and promised to drop in when he was back in town now and then to follow up with his wife’s health care. He left us with his Cheshire grin and a promise to maintain friendship and fellowship.

Some kinds words from Mark:

"I would like to acknowledge everyone who came to this past Tuesday's meeting where I was given my second Paul Harris Fellow distinction.  You have no idea what this organization has meant to me these past 33 1/2 years. The good deeds that the club has done in Salem, as well as around the world (Salem -  India - Romania - clean water - cleft palate surgeries - polio - plus, to mention a few).  I am so proud of everyone who has contributed to Salem Rotary in the past 101 years for giving of themselves to others less fortunate than we are.

Your friendship, roasting and ribbing, fellowship, toasting, work ethic and compassion for others have made me a better person and I am so proud of all of you and 'our' club.  I will miss you all and hope to visit every six months when back for my and Barb's doctor checkups.  When in Naples, Florida do not hesitate to give me a ring so I may return on of the many favors given to me.  Our info is in the new roster.

Again, many thanks for your love and respect in this most recent award - it is more appreciated than you will ever know.

Take care and best of success in the future to all of you and yours!"
