SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

The Beverly President Matthew Piaker led off the meeting with a few jokes: Why did the football ask a small ghost to join them? Because they needed a little spirit!

Rinus of course educated us on the global meaning of football – there being 250 million estimated across the globe, with 1.1 million “American” football players in high school and roughly 70,000 college players. Rinus wished all good luck and mentioned on one hand sports are, “All about winning - but it’s not – its really about the team and what you do with your fellow teammates.” He also mentioned the 1929 game as an example – an on-field fracas developed due to a penalty call – but Salem won 13-0 after police cleared field. He also gave a shout out to the late Salem Rotarian Coach Pep Cornacchio.

Matt Piaker gave his speech looking at the rivalry from the outside, not being a local (but having been in the Beverly Rotary club for 10yrs). He ended with a poem for the holiday season: “Go out and see the lights, or go out and be the light...”

Both Mayors gave speeches to mark the occasion. Beverly Mayor Mike Cahill,  “You never know when you might marry someone from other side of the bridge... makes for an interesting Thanksgiving.” And Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll added “Traditions only keep going if people support them…”

The Salem Principal, Jennifer DeStefano, was Assistant Principal in Beverly – she said she would be happy for some and sad for others as she looked out at folks from both sides of Thursday’s game.

Salem football coach Matt Bouchard is in his 5th yr coaching Salem football.
Some key points were:
  • Starts with town leadership
  • Boosters: great year - thanking his wife
  • Band and cheering group great
  • Football guys littered with obstacles to overcome over this season
  • Special to watch seniors grow over last four years
  • Thanksgiving day game represents sweat and tears celebration of investment over all years kids put into the sport from starting as a little kid to high school
  • Loves to see the brotherhood there across generations of players and fans

Superintendent of Beverly Schools Dr. Stephen Hershey hopes everyone dresses warmly and thinks it great to see such a great rivalry where both sides respect each other so highly.

Beverly notables included:
Principal Betty Taylor (not here because of the minor lockdown which occurred)
Dan Keefe Athletic Director
Red Hutt retired Athletic Director
Frank Forty
Charla Boranks - trainer
Dan Merchand - booster head

Beverly Head Coach Andrew Morency gave a few words:

  • Thanked athletic director Dan Keefe for the chance to coach Beverly
  • Thanked boosters work behind the scenes.
  • Acknowledged the trainer - Charla Bouranis for keeping the kids healthy
