President Rinus paid happy dollars for happy PR - The Salem News published a Rotary press release and thought it was a good idea to show "Lefty" Oosthoek at a networking event on the front page.
 
Rob Lutts said Bob Prager donated to the Rotary Scholarship Fund.
 
Chris Casey's son is working a new job in San Francisco with an accounting firm.
 
Kara McLaughlin said the House of the Seven Gables event was a hit!
 
Bob Conley's wife, Sherill, went deep sea fishing in Alaska for 7 days.
 
Mark Leavitt thanked those that helped out with the DCF picnic - Randy Burba, Jason Consalvo, Trip Mason, Patrick Langmaid, Francesco Sabelli, Mark Shaw, Kathie Strout, Kara McLaughlin, Victoria Davis, Marie Cardillo, Pilar Garro, Jeff Holloran, Leanne Schild, Rinus Oosthoek, and Rich Eisner.   There was a pony ride, arts & crafts, books, and rides. 85 children attended.
 
Joe Amico taught at National Night Out. 16,000 towns across the US participated in National Night Out, which is an event for neighborhoods to partner with police departments to promote camaraderie and safer communities.
 
Viktoria Talebian went to Tanzania on a safari and spent 10 days in a village up Mt. Kilimanjaro.  She said the children were fighting to hold hands with the students from Swampscott High School.  The trip ended in Zanzibar with swimming among the fish and coral reefs.
 
Bruce Whear performed at the Marblehead Little Theatre.  They took suggestions from the audience and comprised a small play based on that.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CLUB BUSINESS
 
Next week the Board of Directors meeting will be at 11am, and the Committee meetings will start at 1pm.
 
Marie Cardillo and Adria Duijvesteijn will preside over the meetings the last 2 weeks in August.
 
On Monday, August 13th at 10:30am,  we will be visiting Salem High School's technical and career department (vocational).  Members are welcome to join.
 
On Friday, Aug 31st, 8-9am, 3-4 members of Rotaract and 2-3 Rotary members (volunteers needed) will be on hand to discuss Rotary’s mission at a service-focused event for new Salem State students.  The event will be held in the lobby of the Ellison Campus Center.
 
The Speaker Committee has been hard at work and is glad to announce that State Rep. Paul Tucker will speak on Sep. 4th in a joint meeting with Salem Chamber, and on Sep. 18th, Tim Clarke will present on his epic boating adventure.
 
On Wednesday September 5th, we will be serving food at Lifebridge.  We will serve on 4 dates this year:  9/5/18, 11/7/18, 3/6/19 and 6/5/19.  We are looking for a leader/person to take charge of the first date.  Rotaract said they will help us serve as well.
 
We will be doing the backpack program again this year.  The Club has officially applied for a District grant for the program.
 
The Club is exploring the possibility of an Elderact Club at the Senior Center.
 
Jason Consalvo has initiated contact for the Booktrust program.
