Lucas J. Miller was appointed chief of police of the Salem Police Department on May 1st, 2021.

Chief Miller began his law enforcement career as a special police officer with the Wellfleet, Massachusetts Police Department in 1986 before joining the ranks of the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a patrolman in 1990.

During his thirty-year career with the NYPD, Miller served in a variety of frontline policing roles including patrol officer, community police officer, detective, patrol supervisor, detective supervisor, homicide supervisor, and detective squad commander. He has served in the Patrol Bureau, the Narcotics Division, the Detective Bureau, the Intelligence Bureau and most recently as a detective lieutenant with the NYPD-FBI Joint Terrorist Task Force (JTTF) where he oversaw investigations of terrorism and terror-related crimes. Miller retired from the NYPD in 2021.

Chief Miller leads a police department of four captains, eight lieutenants, fourteen sergeants, sixty-four patrol officers and twenty full and part-time dispatchers and civilian employees. The Salem Police Department is accredited through the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) and is a member of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC).

Chief Miller earned his baccalaureate degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York City and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 271). He holds membership in the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Massachusetts Major Cities Chiefs of Police and the Essex County Chiefs of Police Association.
